Writer: Helena Bergström

Traveling with a camper along the coasts of Europe is real freedom. You wake up with the sea on your doorstep, stop when the view is at its best and let the road set the pace. Here are ten of Europe’s most spectacular coastal drives – from dramatic bridges in Norway to sand dunes in Poland and sun-drenched cliffs in Portugal.

The most beautiful coastal roads in Europe

We recommend some of Europe’s most beautiful coastal roads, made for a dreamy camper adventure. And yes, you can also travel by car or motorcycle…

1. Norway: Atlantic Road – bridges over the open sea

We start with a road that we haven’t even driven yet, but which we hope to drive this summer! Norway’s Atlanterhavsveien may be short – just over eight kilometers – but the view is monumental. The road winds over bridges between small islands in the open sea and offers an almost unreal coastal landscape. Perfect as part of a longer road trip along the west coast of Norway!

2. Ireland: Wild Atlantic Way – Europe’s epic Atlantic coast

At over 2,500 kilometers, this is one of the longest continuous coastal routes in the world. Here cliffs, green hills and small fishing villages replace each other along the west coast of Ireland. It is grand, windy and perfect for a slow camper trip full of nature experiences. But keep in mind that the roads in Ireland are narrow and are often best suited to slightly smaller campers!

3. France: Corniche d’Or – The red rocks of the Riviera

One of the most beautiful coastal roads in France and Europe runs between Cannes and Saint-Raphaël. Red cliffs plunge into the Mediterranean Sea and the view is ever present. The road is wider and quieter than many other classic Riviera routes – which makes it extra pleasant with a camper. We drove here last summer – fantastic!

4. France: Atlantic coast – surf, sand and endless beaches

The west coast of France offers a very different feeling than the Riviera. Long sandy beaches, pine forests and a relaxed surfing culture await here – especially around La Rochelle and Biarritz. The roads are easily accessible and there are plenty of campsites near the sea. Along the route there are also many places to visit for those who enjoy food, wine and historical sites.

5. Spain: Costa Brava – dramatic cliffs and turquoise coves

North of Barcelona begins the rugged beauty of the Costa Brava. Small coastal roads wind between cliffs and hidden coves, with charming seaside towns such as Tossa de Mar along the way. A perfect combination of beaches, food and culture. Also visit Empuriabrava, with its delightful network of waterways.

6. Portugal: Algarve Coasts – golden cliffs in the south

The Algarve coast stretches along the entire southernmost part of Portugal, from the Atlantic coast in the west to the Spanish border in the east. This coastal strip, which is approximately 150 kilometers long, is known for beautiful beaches with dramatic rock formations. Here you will find nice and cozy seaside resorts such as Sagres, Lagos, Albufeira, Faro and Tavira.

7. Croatia: Adriatic Motorway – The panoramic road of the Adriatic Sea

The Croatian Coastal Road (D8) follows the Adriatic Sea through a landscape of islands, mountains and crystal clear water. The route between Split and Dubrovnik is especially spectacular. It is also possible to go to nice islands such as Brac, Hvar and Pag with the camper. The combination of historic towns and swimming-friendly bays certainly makes this one of the most beautiful coastal routes in Europe.

8. Poland: Polish Baltic coast – sand dunes and wide beaches

The coast of Poland towards the Baltic Sea is one of the most underrated gems of Northern Europe. Mighty sand dunes stretch around the Słowiński National Park and there are long, wide beaches along the way. Here you can travel cheaply and with plenty of space. Don’t miss pearls like Hel Peninsula, Sopot and Gdansk!

9. Finland: Archipelweg – island hopping in Scandinavian nature

A unique route runs through the Åboland archipelago with bridges and small ferries between the islands. It is quiet, close to nature and very Scandinavian. A perfect summer holiday for those who want to combine the coastal road with life on the archipelago. Don’t miss a visit to the beautiful and historic city of Turku and the picturesque and cozy Ngaatli.

10. Sweden: Bohuslän Coastal Path – cliffs and fishing grounds

Sweden’s west coast offers smooth granite cliffs, salty pools and classic fishing villages such as Smögen and Fjällbacka. The roads are easy to drive on and the distances short: perfect for a relaxing summer holiday with plenty of stops along the way. Bohuslän is one of our favorite areas in Sweden – such incredibly beautiful nature and so many picturesque spots!
