Accessibility overlays and plugins promise a quick and cost-effective solution to comply with regulations and make the website more inclusive. However, the expert community often sharply criticizes them, pointing out that they are a superficial patch that does not solve the core problems and can even harm users of assistive technologies, and above all that they do not help comply with legislation in one click. But what if we look beyond the controversy? In this talk I want to explore the world of overlays from a different perspective. Rather than focusing solely on its obvious limitations, I want to look at its positive side and its potential place in a well-understood accessibility strategy. We will learn to see them as: A starter tool that opens the door to the conversation about accessibility in organizations with limited resources. A useful customization panel for a segment of users who need basic visual aids. A possible temporary and deliberate solution, a ‘bridge’ while real structural improvements are being implemented. This is not a lecture to defend overlays as the ultimate solution, but to understand their context, their legitimate use cases and, most importantly, how we can use them as a springboard towards more robust, real and meaningful digital accessibility. Join us and change the framework of the debate: from criticism to construction.
