The Maple Leafs are on an exchange: when will they strike? – The Hockey writers Toronto Maple Leafs Latest News, Analysis and more

The Toronto Maple Leafs have said that they will probably enter the 2025-26 season with the current selection. Although GM Brad Treliving keeps its options open and is said to have been the busier managers to edit the phones for deals and opportunities, his large summer movements are probably complete.

However, make no mistake. Toronto is not ready.

Now that Mitch Marner has now disappeared, the team has not only lost a superstar, but also received a considerable cap -flexibility – something that could make a large trade at the right time. Treliving still has a bait in his sleeve, but the question is not about whether he will make another movement, but when.

When does Toronto pull the tractor over a big exchange?

Timing the next move of Treliving is important. He has been active and too much schedule turnover runs the risk of disturbing early team chemistry in the camp. The idea is early to define clear roles and to determine which players are ready to perform with Marner disappeared. While this team comes together (or not), it must become clear which relocations Treliving are the scene for this off season that he seriously is considering.

The plan can be to follow the example of the Florida Panthers last season. They made great acquisitions in the season to push to a championship. Among them was the acquisition of Seth Jones of the Chicago Blackhawks and Brad Marchand from the Boston Bruins. The timing of those deals mattered, because each was available for much less than what Florida could have had, and would probably have had to pay if those transactions would come earlier.

Who will exchange Toronto to get what they need?

The Leafs have various potential commercial ships that can attract interest from other teams. Brandon Carlo, a right-shot, defensive reliable defender, can be used to scoring or bringing a puck-mover on the blue line. Scott Laughton, who came to Toronto last season at the Handelsdeadline, recently said that he has not yet discussed an extension with the team. He has the chance to make an impact in his first full season, but he can also be a movable acquisition if the right chance occurs.

Even a depth -attackers – David Kampf, Calle Jarnkrok or Nick Robertson – are a factor for a package deal.

As for what Toronto needs, there are gaps that they want to fill now, but things change as the season lasts. Toronto is linked to send Jack Roslovic and Matt Grzelcyk, who can step into a top six or bottom-pair roll. There has also been an unconfirmed chat about a greater trade.

Ultimately, the Leafs may be looking for other pieces that excel under pressure, and that includes adding proven players who can thrive in high pressure situations. They didn’t do much of it this summer. If the new acquisitions have difficulty acting, upgrades must be found.

The timing of the next deal of Treliving is important

The timing of an exchange can be what makes the season a huge success or a colossal failure. Injuries, a slump in offensive production or a trade offer too good to refuse, can all push the Leafs to act. If they now persuade the tractor, their ability to make a movement later is complicated. Toronto can afford to be patient – watching himself, waiting and positioning to stop when the circumstances are ideal.

The status of Toronto as a top candidate will be made clear at the end of October or early November. If they make a shot, it will be clear. If they don’t do that, Treliving must go on something that he was probably on this summer.

Toronto is not standing still. The question is not whether they exchange – it is when.
