If you’ve watched the Toronto Maple Leafs long enough, you’ll start to notice a pattern – and not a good one. For whatever reason, this team continues to sniff out young talent. And the latest example driving fans up the wall? Pontus Holmberg.
Pontus Holmberg barely got a real chance in Toronto, walked for nothing and is now doing well elsewhere. A classic Maple Leafs blunder.
Holmberg’s ending ‘Nothing to see here’… and his Glow-Up
Holmberg’s time in Toronto was basically a shrug. He never stuck around, never got much runway, and then the Leafs opted not to draft him. There he went. The Tampa Bay Lightning jumped to sign him.
And fast forward, he’s in Tampa, playing regular minutes and putting up career numbers. Then, to twist the knife, he suits up for Team Sweden in the Olympics. Maple Leafs fans almost have to hope he gets some shifts with William Nylander. Right now, Holmberg is skating alongside Gabriel Landeskog and Alex Wennberg like it’s no big deal.
Nine goals, eight assists and a plus-9 in 48 games. That’s solid production with the Lightning. Better than solid, considering how it was used in Toronto.
What stings even more is his role. Sweden lets him do all the annoying but important things. He will kill punishments, play solid defenseand put energy into the setup. Stuff the Maple Leafs could have used this year?
But funny thing. Tampa saw something Toronto didn’t. Again.
So… What’s the bigger deal with the Maple Leafs?
This isn’t really just about Holmberg. It’s about the bigger pattern. The Maple Leafs never seem to have a problem giving the superstars the appreciation they deserve. Auston Matthews and William Nylander get their parts, and they’re great. But when it comes to the middle six grinders, the depth guys who make a good team a real team teamToronto continues to misread the room somehow.
Holmberg could have easily fit into the Maple Leafs lineup this season. Honest services both ways, no cheating on plays. In fact, he has the mythological DNA that the Maple Leafs were chasing this offseason. And they let it go to waste. Now he’s thriving somewhere where he actually seems to get what he brings.
And that’s the part that’s so frustrating. He didn’t suddenly become a different player the moment he left. Someone else simply put him in a place where he could flourish.
If Maple Leafs fans think this is the wake-up call, they’re probably wrong
It’s hard to see a player you drafted finding success elsewhere when you’ve spent months wondering why your own bottom six looks like he’s running out of ideas. Good for lightning. They saw the potential and gave him a real role.
Maple Leafs fans are left with that signature sigh we’ve perfected over the years. Hopefully this whole Holmberg thing is enough of a push for the Maple Leafs to actually take their young guys seriously. Develop them. Save them. Give them a chance before you throw them aside.
Right now, the Maple Leafs are turning the lights on and off while other teams are using their castoffs to win trophies.
