Former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar, without naming names, appeared to subtly attack Shubman while emphasizing that individual milestones should not be given too much importance and that strike rates should actually be given more priority in the T20 format.
“He doesn’t have a single 50 in 20 innings. A statistic often cited to suggest a loss of form. T20s is and will always be about strike rates. The last thing you want is an out-of-form batsman who plays cautiously when he gets close to 50. This will lose you the game,” Manjrekar wrote on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter).
In fact, omitting gills is a choice that corrects a wrong: Manjrekar
Manjrekar believes that the selectors have corrected their mistake by dropping Shubman from the side. The cricketer-turned-commentator opined that the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee got carried away after Shubman finished as the highest run-getter in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy earlier this year.
“When you excitedly pick someone for the Test performance for the T20s, this is what happens. Gill’s omission is essentially selectors correcting a mistake they made when they got a bit carried away after the England tour,” Manjrekar said (via his X-handle).
Shubman was replaced by Ishan Kishan, who has not played for India since December 2023 but was in great form while playing for Jharkhand in the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Meanwhile, the former will represent Punjab in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy after missing out on selection for the T20 World Cup.
