In the past few days, details about the Washington Nationals GM Hunt have been based on. We recently discussed the reports that the Nationals have linked to Cubs director Carter Hawkins. However, some new names have become public candidates for the job.
A few days ago the athletics published a list of candidates considering the Nationals. Hawkins was on the list, but there were more names. They included Josh Byrnes van de Dodgers and Amiel Sawdaye from the Diamondbacks.
These are two interesting candidates with two very different backgrounds, but have an interesting link. Josh Byrnes has actually been a GM, but it was a long time ago. Byrnes was the GM of the Diamondbacks From 2005 to 2010. After that he took over the Padres from 2011 to 2014. Since then he has been an important assistant for the Dodgers.
During his time in both Arizona and San Diego, Byrnes was a great assignment, but he could never win enough competitions to hold his work. His drafting bravery, however, helped the next man who came after him.
In Arizona, he set -up The will of Max Scherzer and Paul Goldschmidt. With the Padres he set up Max Fried and Trea Turner. He did a number of pretty disastrous transactions, including Scherzer moving while he in Arizona and Anthony Rizzo with San Diego. After more than a decade in the Dodgers organization you would think he learned something. Byrnes also grew up in DC and went to St. Albans.
On the other hand, Sawdaye has never been the most important man. He worked his way up in Boston and actually crossed paths with Byrnes, which was at the Red Sox before he took the D-backs job. After his Stint in Boston, Sawdaye Mike Hazen followed to Arizona. Since then he has been Hazen’s right hand.
Sawdaye went from a trainee with the Red Sox to an experienced director who could be a GM. It is clear that the NATS have a history of renting the D-backs. Would they like to go that way again? Sawdaye helped to build an exciting D-backs team, but he would not be the most flashiest rent. Just like Byrnes, Sawdaye also has a connection with the DC area, while he went to the University of Maryland.
However, another candidate was linked by Mark Feinsand to the NATS. Unlike the last two boys who used to work for the Red Sox, Paul Toboni is a current Red SOX assistant GM.
He has been working for the Red Sox since 2015. Toboni has a background in scouting and player development. The Red Sox have been good at those things in recent years. Players such as Roman Anthony and Jarren Duran have created an exciting home core. The Red SOX has also created an effective pitching lab, with the rise of Payton Tolle a good example of that success.
It is so nice to see all these different names in the task. It is clear that at least there is a certain degree of interest in the competition. Hopefully the Lerner’s can go through their interview process in time and find the best candidate. Whoever is the new GM will have a lot of work to do this out of season.
