Houston, Texas (Ktrk) – Officers of Justice claim that a sitting judge of Harris County is biased against victims of domestic violence and insisting to have the judge removed from a case of domestic violence, according to court applications.
Judge Melissa Morris will rule on the motion of defense lawyers for a new trial in the case of Aaron Wright, which was sentenced to 50 years in prison because in 2021 he was broken into the Tomballhuis of his ex-wife and deposited her five times.
In a motion that was submitted last week, public prosecutors claim that Morris questioned the credibility of the victim and that her “facial expressions showed her accident” with the jury’s verdict.
The motion further claims that Morris applauded in an earlier case of domestic violence and laughed after a non -guilty judgment.
“It’s all about perception,” said ABC13 legal analyst Brian Wice after revising the motion of the public prosecutor.
“What worries me about this motion is that it has all the ear brands of one that could ultimately be successful,” said Wice.
“It is very discouraging. It is disappointing,” says Jamie Wright, a survivor of domestic violence that now argues for other victims.
“To know that when we finally make that decision to reach help, there is a possibility that someone in the legal criminal justice system will laugh at us, that’s just – that’s a lot. That’s a lot to take on,” Wright said.
Judge Morris did not respond to several requests for commenting to her office.
Several lawyers Eyewitness News said, saying that they have always known her as impartial.
“My conviction is that they think that the motion for a new process would be granted by Judge Morris, and this is legal play of the DA’s office to prevent that happening,” said Vik Vij, vice -president of the Harris County Criminal Lawyers Association.
Eyewitness News asked him for some of the specific accusations of the public prosecutors, including that judge Morris laughed after the non-guilty judgment of a jury.
“I wasn’t there, I didn’t see it,” said Vij. “That would be surprising to hear. Sometimes people make laughter or something like that.”
Lawyers say that it is quite rare for public prosecutors to look for the refusal of a judge and to be even rarer that judges are involuntarily removed from a case.
Judge Morris and prosecutors have been established to argue their respective cases during a hearing on Tuesday afternoon.
