ALBUQUERQUE – Welcome to the latest edition of the Ice Wolves Den. This week we have new assistant coach Chris Garrity.
Coach Garrity comes to New Mexico after playing Division II Hockey at Trine University, where he would also serve as Head Coach after his playing career was over.
Ice Wolves head coach Kyle McKenzie says the team is happy to have him: “We were looking for an assistant coach and Chris’ resume was great. We liked his background and knew he was a hard worker. He has a lot of experience, he came from Trine and had a pretty good track record there. He had a number of other opportunities, but he chose New Mexico and we are very excited about it.”
When a new coach comes to a team, getting support from the players can be difficult. Coach McKenzie says that hasn’t been a problem for coach Garrity: “The boys love him. It’s a big family, any new player or coach that comes in here is always welcomed into the family. He’s been a great helping hand and he’s done everything I’ve needed, you can’t ask for more than that.”
The Ice Wolves return home this weekend to take on the Lone Star Brahmas. Friday is the 80s evening, during the 1st break there is an 80s fashion show. A special pregame ceremony will take place Saturday evening to say goodbye to former Ice Wolves player and current youth hockey coach Petr Philippov. Coach Petr returns to Russia next week. Saturday’s pregame festivities begin at 6:25 a.m., with puck drop scheduled for 6:30 a.m. Saturday is also Pink Ribbon evening, where pink ribbons will be handed out to support breast cancer awareness.
The NA3HL Ice Wolves are still on the road as they head to Austin to take on the 1st place Ice Bats. They will finally host their home opener against the El Paso Rhinos next Wednesday, October 29, where they will raise their Fraser Cup Wild Card flag.
