They were only supposed to visit this luxury holiday home for a weekend 19 years ago, but they liked it so much that they never moved.
The mansion-like Henley Beach South home at 143 Esplanade was built for Darren Mitolo, his parents and his two siblings as a spectacular nine-bedroom home that can function as two separate homes or one large one if desired.
It turned out to be the ultimate weekender, and Darren’s parents loved calling home.
“I built it while my father was in charge of construction, and we had a strong focus on making it quality and solid construction, with no expense spared,” says Mr Mitolo.

The striking building at Esplanade 143 can be divided into two homes.
It was a holiday home, but that was short-lived because the residents never left.
It quickly became a hub for the whole family.
Its location on the boulevard offers epic views of the beach.
“We are three brothers and we all have young children, and it was really wonderful for our children to grow up in a beach house on the Esplanade, enjoying the water and spending time with their grandparents.
“It’s two houses and we deliberately built it that way so that the families could share it at different times and not be on top of each other.
“It was purposely built as a beach house, but my parents stayed there for a weekend and never left.
“So they moved downstairs, and because there are nine bedrooms in total, we spread out all over the house and everyone had their own room – it was great.
“It has two separate entrances so you can keep your own privacy, but you can open them into one entrance whenever you want.
“When we’ve had parties there, we usually all sit upstairs and enjoy the beautiful view from the balcony, but we can also go to the front garden, or to the downstairs living area, or to the rear outdoor area where the barbecue is. It’s incredibly versatile.”

The house has a total of nine bedrooms and seven bathrooms.
There are bedrooms and bathrooms on each level.
It has a modern design with large windows that let in plenty of natural light.
It even has a small backyard.
Completed in 2006 and designed by Enoki, the property features two separate double garages, two spacious open plan kitchens, dining and living areas; separate living areas on both levels, four bedrooms on the ground floor and five on the top floor, an outdoor shower, a rear balcony and an entertainment terrace on the top floor.
“We leave with so many special memories – our children really enjoyed that beach lifestyle, being able to walk to the cafes, cross the road to the beach and really enjoy their time together with their cousins and grandparents,” says Mr Mitolo.
“But my parents have now moved and we are all looking for some change, so it is time for someone else to enjoy this, either in a multi-family home or as one large family home.
“It’s the most incredible place to watch the sunset, and everyone who comes here is blown away by it.
“It’s really indescribable. You really have to experience it.”
The best offers for the home close on November 6 at 2 p.m.
