Table Tennis England has launched its new Coaching Development Framework and coaching pathway, which reflects the ways in which coaches learn and the context in which they perform.

The new pathway replaces the previous structure of levels 1-4 with three clear, role-based qualifications: Coaching Assistant, Coach And Head Coach.

  • Coach assistant qualification: Coaching assistants support implementation and help shape safe, positive first experiences for participants. Coaching assistants will have the opportunity to become accredited to deliver sessions independently
  • Coach qualification: Coaches will be supported by this qualification to independently plan, execute and positively impact a wider range of participants
  • Head coach qualification: Head coaches will be developed in strategic leadership to shape environments, programs and people, and drive quality, culture and long-term development within their environment.

The first intake for the Coaching Assistant Qualification will commence in February 2026, with the inaugural delivery of the Coach Qualification taking place in spring 2026 and a second to follow later in the year. The head coach qualification will open for registration in autumn 2026.

Evie Collier, Coach Learning & Development Manager at Table Tennis England, said: “This is a really exciting time to be involved in table tennis coaching as we launch our new coach development pathway and framework.

“We have made these changes to better reflect the coaching environment and ensure that coaches across the country are better supported and equipped to develop themselves and the players they work with.

“I look forward to seeing how the current coaching community benefits from the brand new CPD offering, and how we welcome new coaches and see them develop and progress.”

Coaches who want to know more about the new Coach Development Framework and the new trajectory structure can register for one of the two online Coaching Q&A sessions on January 25 and 27 by clicking on the button below.

This new approach will enable coaches to tailor their development within their qualification through CPD, as well as progress along the way.

The year-round CPD courses will focus on specific environments, allowing both community and performance coaches to identify the opportunities that are most relevant to them and the players they coach.

The new range of CPD options are now available to book live, with courses for January including Corner Coaching, which looks at tactical insights into corner coaching strategies, and Player Pathway to understand the journey and its alignment with coaching methods.

In February, CPD options include Fundamentals of Movement, focusing on movement exercises, balance, coordination and warm-up exercises, and playing styles to help explore different playing styles and coach accordingly.

You can view the 12 month plan for CPD courses below (subject to change) and book courses by clicking the button below.

Coaches with existing Table Tennis England coaching qualifications will be included in the new structure, ensuring their training and experiences are reflected in the new role-based system.

Level 1 Coaches become Coaching Assistants (accredited and recognized to deliver sessions independently), Level 2 and 3 Coaches translate to the Coach qualification, while Level 4 Coaches become Head Coaches.

At the heart of this new approach is the Coach Development Framework, which provides a clear structure for how coaches grow, develop and succeed over time.

Rather than focusing solely on qualifications, the framework recognizes that coach development is continuous and shaped by experience, reflection, training and support. It combines formal learning, practical coaching experience and ongoing CPD to help coaches build confidence, competence and impact within their chosen environment.
