The houses of Australia are confronted with a silent, treacherous enemy that can wipe out thousands of their value and entails serious health risks: fungus.
After an unusually wet winter and with a La Niña watch now published, experts warn that properties throughout the country are ripe for infection, making dream homes potential money wells.
New Aaltasker data reveal a surprising 12 percent rise in the fungal removal tasks in the past three weeks, a clear indicator for the growing problem. But the question on the lips of every homeowner is: where are you most in danger?
Airtasker has carried out an extensive analysis, in which internal data is investigated over jobs in the fungal removal, Google -Zozrends, climate factors such as humidity, rainfall and temperature, and even home conditions, to locate the “shadowy” regions of Australia.
The findings are a wake-up call for property owners.
The eastern suburbs of Sydney have crowned the fungal capital of Australia
The list at the top with a stunning ‘Moldiness score’ of 61.32 out of 100 are the exclusive eastern suburbs of Sydney.
This prosperous area, known for its view of the harbor and high real estate prices, is now also notorious for its hidden fungal problem. Various other Sydney districts are prominently present in the top 10, including the city and the inner south, North Sydney and Hornby, the northern beaches and the inner west.

The grim reality of this fungal crisis was recently exposed in a shocking cause of Coogee, precisely in the heart of the eastern suburbs.
A 73-year-old pensioner, who lived in his public residential unit since 2016, was in a nightmare.
Black fungus, described as “crawling over the walls and carpets like something from a horror film”, had digested his house.
His friend and caretaker, Grace Thomas, revealed that the man “broken and given”, resorting to placing sailing and rugs on the floor to prevent the “squelch under his feet” through the penetrating humidity.

Despite repeated reports to the housing authority between 2019 and 2024, the problem remained, with only temporary solutions. I
Only when the man’s electricity was cut by “water in the walls”, the entire horror was exposed.
An independent Mal Specialist Report in October last year confirmed that the environment was ‘not safe for human life’.
It is not only Sydney who feels the damp pinch
The tropical and subtropical ports of Queensland, Cairns, the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast, together with the Richmond-Tweed region in Northern New South Wales, are also among the top 10 of the national hotspots in the country.
Anthony Johnson, certified fungal recording specialist on Airtasker, said that Mold Notoir is difficult to get rid of as soon as it is held at home.
Even after scrubbing surfaces, traces can hang in the air or deep inside walls, floors and fabrics.
If the underlying moisture problem is not solved, the fungus often returns, making it a persistent and precious problem for households in these risky regions.
“Take Mold in the right way,” he said.
“For small places, supermarket shape sprays and a dry cloth can usually cause mold on walls and corners. But for larger contamination, or when mold appears on porous materials such as benches, mattresses or other furniture, it is best to call a professional.
“Different surfaces require different treatments, and a professional can ensure that the mold is correctly removed while preventing it from returning.
“This is important because, if they are not treated effectively, fungus can release traces that can lead to health problems when they are inhaled – ranging from allergies and breathing problems to neurological symptoms such as headache and brain fog.”
Living in a house infected with mold can lead to a number of health problems.
Johnson also recommends keeping moisture under control.
“Mold thrives in warm, moist environments, so keeping the humidity under control is the key,” he said.
“In the ideal case, the indoor humidity should be around 60 percent – but it must remain below 70 percent, because as soon as the levels touch 80 percent or more, mold can grow quickly.
“To reduce humidity in the house, simple steps such as installing a dehumidifier can repair leaks immediately, dry clothes outside, use air conditioning and improve the air flow make a big difference.”
