The former 76ers’ career hit a wall at the worst possible time

The regular season is almost here, but it’s not so much of a blissful time for a former Philadelphia 76ers big man as he’s just come down with the hammer ahead of what should have been his fifth year in the league as a young journeyman.

Charles Bassey, who had suited up for the Atlanta Hawks during the preseason, ultimately cut back by them. The Hawks were down to one spot and their front office made the decision to stick with young center N’Faly Dante over Bassey.

The former 76ers draft pick, who played just one season with the 76ers, played the past three seasons for the San Antonio Spurs. Although he had played much more on the Alamo City hardwood, he just couldn’t stay healthy enough, and his lack of consistency further derailed his chances for a bigger role.

Now Bassey is reeling as he remains homeless and the regular season starts in a few days. However, the energetic center could still generate some interest in the market as a low-maintenance backup big man who can provide a jolt to any team on defense.

Bassey also spent time this season auditioning for the center-poor Boston Celtics. In fact, he was even part of their training camp pool, though he never suited up for them and his brief stint there didn’t culminate in him even getting a preseason contract with the Celtics.

Now he’ll have to hope another team takes him off the open market, although given that teams are already starting to trim their respective rosters before opening night, he could find it difficult to make an NBA roster, let alone a guaranteed spot.

What works in his favor, however, is the fact that center depth has become increasingly important these days due to the re-emergence of the position, and having multiple bodies to man this role would be ideal, much like the 76ers, although Philly doesn’t really have more room for another center given their many options there.

Hopefully, Charles Bassey can find a way to stay in the NBA, although this setback is certainly one that could prompt him to look for opportunities elsewhere, even outside the league.
