PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS) announced the implementation of the Open Toll Payment System pilot project based on Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) for private vehicles on the Kampung-Sungai Dua Forest Line on the North-South Expressway.

“This initiative marks a significant achievement and the first initial step towards the implementation of the Multi Lane Free Flow” (MLFF) system on Malaysian highways. Through this initiative, registered users are no longer restricted to certain dedicated lanes but can instead enter and exit via any toll lane at the nine toll plazas, namely Hutan Kampung, Alor Setar Utara, Alor Setar Selatan, Pendang, Gurun, Sungai Petani Utara, Sungai Petani Selatan, Bertam and Sungai Dua.

“Covering a distance of 87.7 kilometers, this first phase is expected to smoothen traffic flow at the toll plaza and reduce the risk of last-minute lane changes. ANPR cameras installed at the toll plaza will detect the vehicle’s license plate so that toll charges can be processed automatically through a mobile payment platform linked to the user’s preferred payment method,” PLUS said in a statement.

Backed by artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, the system is designed to identify vehicles under various conditions, including weather, speed, viewing angles, non-standard license plates and
continue to improve accuracy levels over time.

To use this system, users only need to download the mobile application JustGO Malaysiaregister the vehicle, connect the desired payment method such as a debit or credit card, and drive as usual, without the need for additional devices and at no upfront costs to the user.

This mobile application has been developed as an open digital payment platform designed to be jointly owned by the highway sector, facilitating toll payment options in line with the government’s commitment to providing users with more flexible payment methods.

According to PLUS, additional payment methods such as e-wallet and online banking will be introduced in the near future. In addition to toll payment matters, the JustGO Malaysia trut application provides e-billing facilities to facilitate user matters. In the meantime, existing toll payment methods such as Touch ‘n Go, SmartTAG and RFID mash can be used as usual.

Since September 2024, PLUS has been conducting an extensive test of the ANPR payment system. Test results show faster detection than the existing toll system due to wider camera coverage at the toll plaza.

“This test was conducted in close collaboration with the Malaysian Highways Authority (LLM) and other highway concessionaires. Throughout the implementation period of the pilot project, the toll bar will remain in use. Users are advised to maintain a speed between 20 and 25 km/h without having to stop when passing through the toll plaza.

PLUS invites highway users on the Hutan Kampung to Sungai Dua route to try out this system and enjoy the convenience of lane clearance, e-billing and debit and credit card payment options without additional registration fees,” PLUS said.
