It is now official that the next model to be introduced by Pro-Net in Malaysia is called the Proton eMas 7 PHEV, which will be launched in the near future. Proton eMas uploaded an advertisement teaser on the social media page, which shows the model in a red and blue camouflage sticker with the words “Malaysia’s 1st Dual-powered EV”.
The partnership also announced a live broadcast: the eMas 7 PHEV will appear live stream while traveling 1,000km from Penang to Johor Bahru, and back to the Proton Center of Excellence in Shah Alam on January 12 and 13. The convoy also stops at points of interest and visits eMas distributors along the way.
This activity is clearly intended to demonstrate the capabilities of the new model in question, which can offer an “amazing range of more than 1,000 km”. For context, other similarly sized models from the Chinese manufacturer’s brand, such as the Chery Tiggo 7 PHEV and the Jaecoo J7 PHEV, can also travel that far, with both claiming to offer a NEDC range of 1,200km.
About slogan “Malaysia’s first dual-drive EV” is also inaccurate. This is because, as stated in the name, eMas 7 PHEV is a PHEV vehicle plug-in hybrid and no EV. The road tax for this car is calculated based on the power of the ICE engine, and not on the engine power. And black license plates will also be used as on regular cars, instead of white license plates for electric vehicles. Marketing it as an EV is inaccurate and may confuse people.
And is it true that this is Malaysia’s, or Malaysia’s, first PHEV model? PHEVs have been on the local market for a long time, around 2015, although back then they were only offered by premium brands, until the aforementioned two Chinese manufacturer models were launched here last year. In case slogan that refers to the first Malaysian made PHEV, this is also incorrect as it concerns a model rebadging of existing models produced by Geely – here not fully developed by local energy.
