In October, Mike Conley becomes 38, which, in combination with his already decreasing game, makes Conley’s role with the Minnesota Timberwolves an important story when the season approaches. The veteran -Point Guard was a starting point guard during his career and during his last two and a half seasons with the wolves. Conley, however, came from the bank seven times last season.
Earlier this month, Jon Krawczynski said of athletics that it is “very possible” that the Wolves Conley replaced by Donte Divincenzo in the starting line -up. During a recent appearance The Dane Moore NBA PodcastKrawczynski said he “leans to” Divincenzo from the opening evening.
It is important to note that Krawczynski said he does not report this. Nevertheless, it must mean something that the most trusted Timberwolves reporter seems to think that Donte Starting is a strong opportunity.
Is starting Divincenzo about Conley logical?
Starting Divincenzo would give the wolves some extra positional size and versatility. On 6-foot-4 he has a considerably height benefit from the 6-foot Conley. The line -up of Divincenzo with the starters placed a 4.6 net rating compared to a 3.2 net rating with Conley next to the starters. The line -up with Conley, however, played just over 500 minutes than the line -up with Divincenzo.
In some respects, starting Conley is the safer choice for the wolves, especially given the stabilizing power that the game of Conley offers. Moreover, Conley was on average more coupling time minutes than Divincenzo. Yet Divincenzo offers more creation and defense of the perimeter. This is a difficult decision for head coach Chris Finch.
According to Clean the glass, Divincenzo was actually more impactful as Point Guard than a shooting guard last year. He placed a +8.4 Efficiency Differential as a point Guard and a +5.3 while playing shooting guard. Divincenzo also played a little more minutes than Conley last season. As Conley gets older, this trend probably seems to continue. As a result, it would be logical to start Donte if he started playing more.
In the 10 games where Divincenzo started last season, he raised his averages across the board, with an average of 14.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists. If Divincenzo is a full -time starter, it is possible that his production could increase compared to last season. Although there are clear benefits of starting Divincenzo, it should not be a no-brainer, given Conley’s High-IQ Playmaking and the ability to orchestrate the attack.
Anyway, it is clear that Divincenzo has a solid chance of earning a starting role. Whether it starts the season or is a change in the middle season, it feels like a strong opportunity that Divincenzo joins the starting group.
