The dream house of 2026: why it’s not what you think

The dream house of 2026: why it’s not what you think

For generations, the Australian dream home was largely defined by size, status and street appeal. But in 2026, that ideal will be rewritten.

Buyers are no longer looking for the largest floor plan or the shiniest facade; they are looking for homes that feel quiet, traditional and personal.

Few understand this shift better than Charlotte Wilson, Senior Interior Designer at acclaimed architecture and design studio SJB.

Wilson says buyers now want spaces that cherish their daily lives rather than display them.

“It’s really important that design is timeless and that we ensure homes feel bespoke and personal,” she says.
“We want people to feel at home – and not feel the need to change the design every time a new trend emerges.”

Natural materials such as stone and wood bring warmth and texture to the interior of Rozelle Village, designed by SJB.

Design-oriented living: form that feels good

This is design-oriented living – a movement towards spaces that are intimate, tangible and thoughtful.

Unlike minimalist apartments that focus on the outside view, today’s homes are designed from the inside out, prioritizing how each room feels and functions.

“It could be unusual joinery, natural wood or beautiful stone tiles,” says Wilson.
“You want the space to have personality. Your home should feel like your sanctuary.”

Showroom to sanctuary

The perfect home now feels lived in, layered and personal – not like an exhibition space.

As buyers tune into what truly makes them happy, they choose character and comfort over perfection.

That might mean swapping stark white walls for color and texture, or mixing sentimental furniture with modern design.

“You can have a nice neutral background and add warmer, cooler or brighter tones,” Wilson explains.

“If you are a smaller user and want to keep your furniture, you can still take it with you; it still fits the interior design.”

Design features such as stone island benches or built-in shelves to display favorite items strike the balance between style and everyday life.

“You want to feel like you can hang your favorite art and it just works,” she adds.

“Or create a small moment – a vase of flowers under a hanger – that elevates the space.”

How Rozelle Village brings it to life

These ideas have been brought to life at Rozelle Village, a new living option in Sydney’s west, where SJB designed each apartment with the feeling of home at its core.

Wilson says the sense of belonging begins the moment you walk through the door.

“You have a real little entryway where you can put your end table and keys before heading into the rest of the house,” she says.

Every layout has been carefully considered for comfort and connection, from a seamless indoor-outdoor flow to flexible living zones.

“We want everyone to feel like they went to a designer personally and ended up with a beautifully thought-out apartment that really feels like home.”

Peaceful luxury in every detail

This approach embodies quiet luxury — understated design rich in detail and warmth.

Think solid travertine tiles in kitchens and bathrooms, or wooden joinery in cupboards and shelves that add depth and texture.

“With the stone, we elevated these spaces to the next level, making them appear custom-made,” says Wilson.

“In the showers we used two marbles in a checkerboard pattern – it’s luxurious but playfully unexpected.”

Other accents – LED hanging lighting, large mirror cabinets and high-quality taps and handles – create subtle moments of pleasure.

“As designers, we caught up with PERIFA (the developers) after the display suite launched,” she says.

“We stood around the kitchen island and we all said, ‘Wow, this already feels like home.'”

Each apartment is designed with the feeling of home in mind: from inviting entrances to bright living areas.

A village for the future

Because the ultimate dream home is not just about interior design, but also about belonging.

Rozelle Village is located in the heart of Rozelle, known for its thriving cafes, local businesses and creative spirit.
Wilson says the development will only increase that energy.

“There is a real sense of community in the building. With shared spaces, local shops and cafes, it will be a great place,” she says.

Developed by PERIFA in collaboration with Mitsubishi Estate Asia, Rozelle Village offers one to three-bedroom apartments and penthouses, with the exhibition suite now open.
