The Dream 76ers buyout target just came in on some stunning news

The Philadelphia 76ers, like the rest of the league, are likely pondering the trade market as the deadline approaches in a few weeks. However, that shouldn’t stop the front office from looking ahead to what could become viable options for them in the buyout market, which often gets crowded after the All-Star break.

That’s even more the case considering a former All-Star could be in position via a buyout. According to Josh Robbins of The Athletic (subscription required), Khris Middleton is unlikely to be shipped by the Wizards before the trade deadline. As such, the most viable solution is an eventual contract buyout, making the former All-Star available for the picking.

The 76ers, who are still in dire need of consistent production from the perimeter and some more playmaking power, should vigorously pursue Middleton once Washington officially lets him go. That would simply be an extremely rare opportunity that they can’t gloss over, as the veteran would make a world of difference in Philly as a complementary piece.

Khris Middleton would be a great buyout target for the 76ers

Philadelphia has more rotation-caliber players at the forward positions this time around compared to last season, but their options behind Paul George still need to be strengthened. Kelly Oubre Jr., his primary backup, has become wildly inconsistent as of late, with many fans calling for an upgrade in light of his expiring deal.

But no matter what happens with Oubre, the 76ers should to aggressively pursue Middleton if he does indeed become available. While he’s a glaring red flag right now due to nagging injuries, he’s still a very solid scorer and secondary playmaker who can take the team to the next level in the playoffs with his championship verve.

Of course, Middleton is nowhere near the caliber of player he once was. In fact, his raw numbers this season are so grim that you would have to go back to his rookie campaign to find worse numbers. Still, he’s a proven veteran who performs especially well in high-stakes situations — something the 76ers would like to have off the bench.

It also shouldn’t cost the 76ers an arm and a leg to lure Middleton in if he is bought out by the Wizards. As such, there is very little risk involved in pursuing him, despite the high rewards that could come from it.

While they are already packed with talent, another proven name wouldn’t hurt. The Philadelphia 76ers are desperate to make a deep playoff run this season, and signing Khris Middleton from the buyout market could end up being a midseason hat trick that could elevate their level immensely.
