The cuts continue

I should probably post a thank you note here for running Nachos Grande the end-of-year prizes again this year and I was able to win Blog o’ the Year for the fifth time.

I appreciate it after so many years of doing this, because as I’ve said before, blogging about maps is far from the hip, young thing it once was. The fact that people are still voting for NOC all these years later means that I’m still doing what I set out to do: writing about my love for maps and trying to do it in an interesting way. Glad I can still help you.

Okay, now on to getting rid of some cards.

To my great surprise, the last cutback session a month ago was an immediate success. So I’m going to try again with some slightly — very slightly — more interesting cards. As a refresher, I need to get cards from my house. The map room is large, but can no longer hold everything. To make room for more cards I have to remove cards that are not usable, i.e. those that have been in boxes for years.

My goal is to give these cards away in one go to the first taker. Just be the first person to say you want them AND send me an email with your address. I’ll allow a week before anyone can claim them. Then I take matters into my own hands, which may mean throwing away the cards.

This time about 250 cards have to go. Here’s a general view:

At the top is one of my least favorite sets of all time, 1992’s Donruss, with just over 50 cards. In the middle are some Bowman/Bowman Chrome cards with mostly prospects – similar to what was in the last stock, none that really impressed. And on the right is more Bowman, from the 1990 and 1991 sets, which are honestly two of the most boring sets ever made, but there are some stars in them. About 40 cards in total.

In the bottom row about fifty cards from Donruss from 1981, all extras that have been waiting for a while. 1981 Donruss is not a favorite in Bluesky’s weekly giveaway for whatever reason (cardboard?) In the middle are Fleer prospect cards from the mid-1990s and a handful of Fleer from around 2007, less than five cards. Finally, on the right, some Swell extras from 1990 and yes, there are duplicates. I suspect the 1990 Swell has been printed far more times than the 1989 and 1991 Swell, which I’m still trying to complete.

So again, I don’t know if that appeals to anyone (I can certainly sell it, right)? Also, I don’t know how many people are reading right before the holidays, but I won’t be doing anything with these cards until at least the 30th.

And more austerity sessions will follow.
