The current world order ‘reflects a bygone era,’ says Cuban Foreign Minister

Mr. Parilla started expressing solidarity with Palestine and condemning what he described as the “genocidal extermination and ethnic purification” of Palestinians by Israel.

He said that at a time when “a handful of countries and individuals have collected more wealth than the vast majority of all other countries together”, the United Nations remains and must be protected and strengthened the most representative body of the international community.

Mr. Parilla called for a new international order that guarantees “the right to development, sovereign equality, participation and representation of developing countries in the global policy decision.”

He referred to the reform initiatives of the Secretary General, who, he said, must strengthen the intergovernmental nature of the United Nations and improve the ability to better improve the urgent challenges of today.

Refuse ‘peace by strength’

The international community, according to him, must reject the doctrine of “Peace by strength” that is “equivalent to imposing the random will of American imperialism to everyone,” and would be at the expense of the values on which the UN was founded.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs also demanded an end to the economic blockade that Cuba had imposed by the United States for more than six decades, which he described as “an economic war” aimed at depriving Cubans of their resources of existence and sustainability.

“Cuba is confronted with a serious scenario of long -term and daily blackouts, difficulties in providing food, insufficient availability of medicines, reduced public transport, limited community services and pronounced inflation, which erod real incomes.”

Mr. Parilla also warned of an imminent threat of war in the Caribbean and said that the use of US forces in the region to combat crime and drug trafficking was a pretext and “a dangerous situation that violates international law.”

With regard to climate change, the minister said that, from the stage of the general meeting, science and “decades of collective work” to protect the planet, are questioned.

“If the non -durable production patterns and the consumption of capitalism are not fundamentally changed, we will exceed the fatal threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius before 2030,” he said.

Referring to new technologies, Mr. Parilla said that, with a small number of transnational companies that impose their operating systems and check what content is seen, read and heard: “We suffer from the dictatorship of the algorithm.”

He called on the UN to create common standards, to ensure that technology, in particular artificial intelligence, benefits everything.
