The text was the worst nightmare of every parent: a 17-year-old said he had been abducted, shot and injured by a group of men on a highway in Florida.
Legal enforcement scrambled at the stage. The boy went to find a warning about the entire state. After it became known that the teenager had said that his abductors were ‘Spanish’, an outpouring of indignation online followed.
But nothing was true, the authorities say now.
In a text to his mother last week, the teenager – identified as Caden Speight – that he was shot down and abducted by four Latino men on Highway 484 in Dunnellon in Marion County, FLA.
The claim led the authorities to give an amber alert from the entire state and led to a furore against Latinos on social media.
“It’s time to act, no more words,” wrote a user on X and tagged President Trump. “Let the dogs unleash hell.”
Another shared a drawing of a standing figure family-the males dressed in Sombreros-with the caption, “large or small, deport them all.”
On 25 September, representatives from the Sheriff of Marion County arrived nearby A press release from the desk.
The report led to further investigation.
Caden was eventually found in Williston, Fla., Said the authorities, and his story about kidnapping unraveled under further investigation.
Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods said on Monday in a video statement that detectives gathered evidence that shows: “The first details that Caden sent to his family were incorrectly proven – completely invented.”
“We have found evidence of a single shot in which Caden left his truck,” said Woods. “His claims that he had been shot and abducted were quickly refuted. We then learned that he had bought a bicycle, tent and camping supplies just before he reported this.”
Caden bought a red and gray tent from a Walmart in Ocala, Fla., Before reporting that he had been shot and abducted, Woods said.
“Caden just drove away to Williston, while the rest of us lags behind the worst and my team worked in overdrive to solve this case,” Woods said.
The teenager had a gun with him and shot himself in the leg before he was found, the authorities said.
Woods claimed that Caden did this to “continue the list”, and added that the authorities believe: “There is no chance that Caden’s shot wound came from any type of an attacker.”
Woods said it was not “off the table” that the teenager could be confronted with criminal prosecution. The research is underway and detectives have questions for Caden, he added, but his parents have not allowed researchers to talk to him.
The update of law enforcement led to a new wave of commentary on social media, ranging from convictions to calls for patience and unity.
“The fact that he tried to make it about four Spanish men who kidnapped and don’t care that that could have caused some real damage to innocent men [were] Doing nothing wrong in itself is despicable, “wrote a Facebook user.
“I think we should all be supportive and a real community and not all of them can act and jump to conclusions,” said another. “Many people come up with things. All we have to do is pray.”
