Vladimir Putin set up a “dominant” display when he met Donald Trump in Alaska yesterday – but his outer trust masked important signs that he is not a welman, said an expert in the field of body language. The two leaders spoke more than three hours behind closed doors about the war in Ukraine, with world leaders and media who are eagerly awaiting the outcome.

But Body language expert Darren Stanton suggests that their non-verbal interactions might be more than what was actually said during a press conference after their discussion. Mr. Trump greeted Mr Putin warmly upon his arrival, used a strong handshake and subtly pulled him forward, said Mr. Stanton. He described the movement as characteristic of Mr Trump’s style and explained: “He tapped the hand of Mr Putin a few times, as if he wanted to say:” Good Boy. “

Putin’s legs ‘Shake’ while talking to Trump

“It is almost a navigating gesture, something he often does with other politicians.”

When he gestured to his presidential limousine, Mr. Trump laid his hand on the back of Mr Putin, another movement that Mr. Stanton said, indicated: “You are on my grass, you are on my conditions.”

Mr. Putin’s “physical presentation” was remarkable, remarked Mr Stanton, in particular his “difficult” walk from the plane, with suggestions that he was wearing a weak, and apparent break halfway the stairs when he left.

He said, “These are subtle signals, but in body language they are important,” and they emphasize that even small hesitations or breaks can indicate discomfort or physical tension.

Once sat together, the two leaders showed matching and mirror behavior, who adopted similar attitudes, Mr Stanton continued.

The couple had “shared each other’s attitude and hand positions,” he said, in which Mr Trump often used a “reverse tower” gesture, who locked his fingers to transfer power and control.

Mr. Stanton emphasized: “Mr Putin reflected that gesture and also showed authority,” said Mr. Stanton.

Both leaders also spread their legs while standing, an attitude that signals dominance and presence.

Mr. Stanton specifically emphasized what he called Putin’s “micro expression”.

He said: “Micro -expressions are universal. They reveal one of the seven emotions: happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise, contempt or disgust.

“I saw elements that Mr Putin was in pain, both while walking and when they were briefly on stage for photos.

“He moved with the measured, controlled style that was expected from someone trained in the KGB. But the micro expression revealed a different story – he is not good. There were subtle signs of pain in his facial expressions and movements, even when he projected authority.”

Such involuntary expressions, Mr Stanton argued, are difficult to mask, even for highly educated political figures.

Despite Mr. Trump’s experience in such encounters, Mr. Stanton said that Mr Putin maintained control of the top.

He said, “He didn’t give anything. Everything was on his conditions,” said Stanton. He added that Mr. Trump allowed Mr Putin that the monologues of about 15 minutes were expanded, with Mr Stanton tapping the Lord Trump on stage, a clear sign of impatience.

As far as the general impression is concerned, Mr. Stanton said that Mr Putin showed his characteristic calmness.

The top, held on a joint base Elmendorf -Richardson in Anchorage, concluded without a formal deal and Mr Stanton emphasized that the body language told more than the words.

He concluded: “From a power dynamic point of view, Mr Putin seemed dominant. But the subtle signals, especially in his expressions and physical movement, indicate that he experiences discomfort or health problems.”
