Persistent rainy weather prompted the city of San Diego to activate the system bad weather shelter program Thursday for the second day in a row.

The program provides additional shelter capacity when specific weather conditions are met, typically November through March, at the following locations:

  • Living Water Church of the Nazarene1550 Market St., capacity for up to 28 adults, check-in 8:00 PM with on-site reservations from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, with check-out 6:30 AM
  • Joan Kroc Center1501 Imperial Ave., capacity for up to 61 adults with 11 additional beds for families with minor children and/or single women, check-in 4:00 PM and all night until full, check-out 5:00 AM
  • Father Joe’s Villages Paul Mirabile Center1501 Imperial Ave., capacity up to 62 adults, check-in at 4:00 PM and all night until full, check-out at 5:00 AM

People can go directly to shelters to access a bed on a first-come, first-served basis.

The program activates when the temperature drops below 50 degrees and there is a 40% chance of rain, or when the temperature is 45 degrees or lower regardless of the chance of rain. Shelters are also activated during exceptional weather events, such as when an inch or more of rain falls in 24 hours or there are persistent high winds.

Check-in and check-out times vary by shelter location, but most beds usually open in the late afternoon and must be vacated early the next morning.
