The Chancer defies a 20 yard handicap in the Carrick feature

The Chancer ($13) overcame the 20-yard deficit to claim Sunday afternoon’s Ladbrokes Meander Valley Cup worth $14,000 at Carrick Park (2560m).

Driven by Tarn Ford, the Tammy Langley-trained pacer dropped back and had to pass the entire field from the 1000 metres.

He finished best on the outside, scoring by 1.7 meters from Imperial Laz ($4.80) and Montgomery Burns ($26) in a 2:02.3 second mile pace on the rain-affected circuit.

“He galloped away a little bit, which was probably more my fault. Then he hit his oars pretty quickly,” Ford said after the race.

“The plan was to stay on the fence for the long run and smash through the gaps. When I was no worse off I decided to go to the running line and hopefully get run into it. But at the 500m mark no one made a move and I knew he could handle the last bend and be strong for 200m. So as the bend approached I thought I’d try to take a break while they were all stacked up.”

Ford gave what has become her usual racing salute as she crossed the line.

“My little brother Nate told me to salute when he won, and he’s a real family favorite,” she said of the pacer.

The other main race of the day was the Final Westwood Quarry Trainers Incentive (2150m), where the winning trainer will win a brand new Missile Race Sulky.

This year it went to Paul Ashwood, who prepared Mcmayhem ($1.60 favourite) for victory.

Driver Rohan Hillier continued to lead the pacesetter in a slow-paced race before proving too strong for his opposition in the closing stages, scoring by 5.9 meters from Glenview Lanikai ($3.90) and Franco Vai ($14).

Mcmayhem, a full four-year-old Mcwicked, has now won three of his seven starts, with three minor placings to his name.

Brodie Davis continued his good form with an impressive treble win with Rocky Stride ($5), Into The Harkness ($4.20 favourite) and Centurian Miss ($7)

Liam Older also rode a double to win with Magic Joe ($3.60) and Dazzle Me ($15).

And Grace Jones continued the young driver theme, registering her second winning double, after Hay Miki ($3.20) and Rollwitharty ($4.60 favourite) won the last two races.
