The CEO of the company should decide what the business strategy is: Scindia on Voda-Idea

Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has said that consultations on adjusted gross revenue (AGR) with regard to Vodafone-Idea are underway, but it was the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company who should decide the business strategy.

“I don’t think because you (the government) are a share owner and a minority, you can advise them (the company). It is the CEO, who has to define what the business strategy is. It is for that company to define,” Scindia told. business line in an interview.

The government obviously wants the company to flourish, serve its customers well and grow. “But that responsibility should lie with management, and not with the Ministry of Telecom,” the minister added.

The government has a 49 percent stake in Vodafone-Idea, and the company is still struggling to retain customers and making big losses. Recently, the Supreme Court allowed the government to reassess Vodafore-Idea’s AGR dues, which has been a lifeline for the company that is under severe financial pressure.

Rollout of 5G

Meanwhile, the company said on Friday it has started the next phase of rolling out its fifth-generation (5G) network in even more cities as it boosts 4G capacity. The company’s 5G services are already available in 29 cities.

In a letter to its subscribers, Abhijit Kishore, CEO of the company, said it has strengthened its digital services ecosystem through strategic partnerships across travel, Internet of Things (IoT), fintech, MSME enablement and future-proof connectivity solutions.
