Today marks the start of the final countdown to the final of the ITTF World Team Table Tennis Championships and we can now confirm which countries England could face in Phase 1a!
With 100 days to go before London welcomes the biggest stars to table tennis’ biggest stage, the excitement is really starting to build.
64 men’s teams and 64 women’s teams from each continent will take to the arena in the largest-ever World Championships – a fitting way to celebrate the centenary in the city that hosted the first World Championships in 1926.
The Copper Box Arena in the heart of London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and the iconic OVO Arena Wembley will be packed with passionate fans cheering on their favorites as they compete for the ultimate prize of becoming the best table tennis nation in the world.
Host nation England will take center stage during a sensational Bank Holiday weekend at Wembley, when they will join the seven top-placed nations in Leg 1a.
Who could England play?
England and the top seven seeds meet at the OVO Arena Wembley on May 2 and 3. The eight countries will be divided into two groups of four, meaning England Men and England Women will each be guaranteed three mouth-watering matches against top teams.
The men could face defending champions China or Olympic bronze medalists France, who are the top two seeds. The top ranks also include Sweden, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Germany and Chinese Taipei.
Among the women, defending champion China is again the leader, with Japan in second place. Next come the Republic of Korea, Germany, France, Chinese Taipei and Romania.
