During the Second World War the area was bombed and the casino was severely damaged. But the real end of the gambling industry came after the war, when Romania became a socialist state.
When the country became socialist, the new government chose to ban casino activities because they considered gambling immoral and linked to capitalism and class differences. The building was subsequently closed as a casino and was instead given new functions, such as a cultural center, event space and restaurant. Over time, the building began to fall into disrepair and eventually the casino was largely abandoned.

Why the casino never reopened
But how come the casino never reopened? When communism finally fell in Romania in the 1990s, there was interest in reviving the casino. But the plans got stuck in the concept phase. On the one hand, the renovation costs were very high, on the other hand, the gaming industry had completely changed. Large casinos were generally no longer that interesting.
The cultural influence of communist rule had changed the perception of gambling over time, and there was a much more dynamic discussion on topics such as gambling addiction, economic problems and social consequences, leaving many politicians and residents skeptical about the reintroduction of a casino operation in such an iconic building. Instead, the building was considered a cultural heritage to be preserved, rather than re-commercialized.
That is why they chose to renovate and preserve the building, but also to give the building a new purpose.
From ruin to museum
After several years of planning, renovation began in the 2010s, and then the goal was to restore the building as close to the original as possible, both on the outside and on the inside. To recreate what was and at the same time meet modern safety requirements.
Once the casino opened its doors again, it was no longer a casino, but a museum and cultural center. Visitors could still walk through the old halls and see how the rooms were designed, as well as view exhibitions about the history of the building and the development of the city as a whole.
There were old photos on display, both drawings and objects that told us what life might have been like at that time, about a hundred years ago.
Some of the buildings are still used for cultural events such as concerts and exhibitions.
