The car without a driver avoids a ticket for illegal U-turn, because the police ‘cannot pay a robot’

A vehicle that puts an illegal U-turn on the road has avoided to be fined because it is without a driver. The police in California stopped the Waymo car after it had completed the maneuver ‘straightforward’ of the authorities at a traffic light. The police of San Bruno said, “because there was no human driver, a ticket could not be published.” Officers said they cannot book “robot”, so no ticket was published.

The police explained that there was “no driver, no hands, no idea”, adding that it was a “plot twist” for the incident. After the U-turn, police officers flashed their lights and sounded a siren to stop the car, which immediately stopped. The authorities then succeeded in communicating with someone from Waymo using technology in the car.

The police said it hopes that the “reprogramming” of the vehicle will prevent it from making more illegal movements in the future.

Legislation is also drawn up to enable the authorities to issue notifications and tickets directly to companies.

The State Governor, Gavin Newsom, signed a bill last year to allow officers to issue a “notification of non -compliance” when a car without a driver breaks the traffic laws. However, the law will only take effect in July next year.

The law also requires companies to set up a direct fate for First Responders.

Waymo, the car manufacturer, said NBC that it “looks at the situation” and that the “current lessons and experience” will strengthen the safety of the vehicle.

Waymo cars were launched more than ten years ago as a project under Google’s X Research Lab. The vehicle works via external cameras and sensors.

Earlier this year, the company experienced a major software problem, which led to more than 1,200 cars being recalled. The error caused collisions with chains, gates and other stationary road barriers.

Waymo was also investigated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration after it received 22 reports of the vehicles that acted dangerously and reportedly violated road safety regulations.
