The ruthless march of increasing car quality has been remarkable. Cars that were demolished. Often in fact. In a conversation with the research agency, JD Power, analysts made it clear that modern cars almost never leave the owners of the owners, their “love affair” with their whip evaporated as a tender date. But this is what was lost in the assessment: the sizzle. As modern cars become safer and more consistent, at least ‘good’, they have become generic.

Luxury sedan in full size
I’m here to Audi S3 Is not bruffered in a tasteless subcompact. The 328 hp with turbo charger four -cylinder rocks. But what this Audi really makes unique and lustwhy is that it gets a seven -speed gearbox with double clutch. This, and not the thrust of the motor compartment, offers the S3 a decisive “extra something”, or if you want to be pretentious, I don’t know what. But if you wipe left or right for a small sports sedan with Grunt, you should ask what else compares. And I will weigh that for you too.
To provide you with the most accurate information, this item uses data from various manufacturers and authoritative sources.
You can tie the knots
My first day with the Audi, I had an appointment a few stops the highway. With six performance performances that re -calibrate the rigidity of the ratchet suspension and herkalibres – among other things – factors that I will mark soon – I left Audi’s Drive Select mode in car. At a constant 72 km / h (I know the rhythm of my local police officer and when they are inclined to hunt speeders), the A3 performed admirable “sanctuary” tasks. Every business managerial commuting in this car would find it enough Hushen enough to call and call, and although your customers may not fill in the second row, because the knee room behind the back chair is only sufficient, you would not come to a chic dinner in the Audi. It looks exactly the part of luxury, but not too flashy.
Or you can let the chest hair fly!
Do you remember those different modes? When the weekend arrives, Flip Drive selects in its new Dynamic Plus institution. You have to agree with a pop-up on the touchscreen when you have moved the physical switch from the car to Dynamic. Say a small, Gedempte: “Yes, I agree”, tap and leave a quiet Hallelujah. Dynamic Plus unleashes the following:
A new couple split (donated by the hotter RS3) makes the shooting couple from the inside to the rear wheel of the outside, which reduces the understeer
Reduces interference of stability control
Raises the stationary
Removes the gear and falls faster under full throttle valve
In addition to all these, dynamic plus biased power is consistent backwards, which has the effect that you never perceive when the front tires grab. The bombing of a few winding roads (with a Ferrari 458 that casually follows on the way to a car), I really noticed how of course the S3 threw strength to the rear axle. If you happen to be less than perfect to come back to the gas, the Audi easily forgetting the error, because it is still still Four AWDSo Grip feels bottomless.
The transmission is the key
Although the couplter is definitely the star of the tech show on the S3, and a function that you will like because it feels the car so much sharper in Unbending Corners, there is still a brilliant trick on this car. It is called Turbo Charger Preload, and it rinses the turbo at a faster speed when you are off the throttle.
This works somewhat as an Old-School Intercooler, which compensates for the turbo delay. I noted this when I had to pass on the highway. Instead of being a gear kickdown by default, the car simply drove forward and accelerated effortlessly.
Seven speeds, all playful, all versatile
Paddle-shift gearboxes are made equal. But the double clutch systems in both the Volkswagen Golf R and the S3 and RS3 audis are fantastic. Complain everything you want these cars to “require” three pedals and a stick, but drive this car before illuminating Reddit. A characteristic that I wanted more car manufacturers to emulate – that Audi is crushing – is flexibility. You have rarely refused a shelter, and the standard setting is not to dump a revival in your lap when you have not asked for it. No. It works exactly as it should be: like a manual system.
The faster shifts can become quite addictive
Audi has also upgraded the gearbox, so that more torque could go through the coupling package, which in turn increases the gear change rate. That said, while some auto-manual transmissions yield a lot of shift shock in their sportiest modes, the Box from Audi still feels silk in one way or another, even on aggressive retreats. That leads to video game antics when you hit a stacked set of Esses, and the dynamics become especially pleasant when you turn up and down between the second and fourth gears. A friend on the hunting gun made it fly that the transmission of the S3 looked like a pretty addictive medicine. ” Yes, indeed.
A smooth suspension exudes adulthood
You could think appropriately that a reasonable alternative to this car would be Toyota’s GR Corolla. Because on paper that Toyota is almost as fast and you would save five Grand in the handshake. But you do not drive on a stupid sheet. And the GR Corolla is designed for nut-to-the-wall, let’s do this! (In all caps of course !!) Absurdity. I hardly damn that taste of hot hatch. It’s just that the Audi S3 is bent on adult sportiness, while the GR is just not.
For example, the Audi underwent some suspension revisions in the past year and they resulted in faster transitions and better lateral control. Moreover, Audi says that they have improved at the center, and that is credible because this car feels particularly sharp from Dead-Center in a bend and back to the middle. Although the S3 is great and very athletic, it is never at the expense of hardness. I live in Pothole Central – we pay extra taxes for that advantage. Yet the S3 never brought an eye or drove hard. It is the types of balance.
Most obvious alternative
The Volkswagen Golf R is much closer to a brother than a cousin of the Audi S3. They are almost identical mechanical, so you really have to see how the two cars stack.

There is less space in the Audi S3
There are abundance between these two. You will notice that on paper (according to tests by Car and driver), both the Golf R and S3 sprint somehow in the same time up to 60 km / h, despite the extra weight of the Audi. This is probably due to the weather conditions on the day of testing and other intangible assets. But what you can see is that every car gets an identical powertrain, and if there are small differences, consider the hatch shape of the Sedan of the Audi, and how that can influence the handling via something different weight distribution.
Regarding the considerations, although the Audi costs a hair more, the interior is slightly less useful, because it is not a hatchback. The rear seat turns forward and almost folds flat, but a pass-through is never as handy as the maw of an open part. Hatchbacks, however, are louder, not least because it is difficult to insulate the exhaust resonance from penetrating through the rear hatch floor. The Audi can reach a “business class” sounds with the best of its class.
The interior facilities in the Audi are also a bit smoother. Nobody does German “clean” as VW does, but the Audi feels more like the Mid-Luxe Sport, with Gedempte, but Premium Tactile Surfters.
Top Speed’s Take: A True Stealth icon
There are other obvious alternatives to the Audi. The Acura Integra-Type S, just like the Golf R, has a hatchback configuration that triples the amount of space behind the rear seats versus the Audi, and the Acuras Free Reverend 320 hp, four-cylinder is a joyful engine as in the US is sold today. Acura also sells its taste of pleasure with a nice manual six -speed gearbox. But the hangup, if there is one, is front wheel instead of four -wheel drive.
Then there is the BMW M240i xDrive Coupe. The inline six has 382 hp, so it is more muscular than the Audi, and it is just as fast to 60 km / h. But for $ 53,775, the MSRP of the M240i starts five grand higher than the basic price of the S3. Is the BMW an explosion? I bet! My colleague William Clavey would claim that the manumatic of the BMW is just as fun as that of Audi, and I will not argue that point. But if the most important benchmark is ‘Stealth’, the Audi will win quieter compared to the Acura and BMW. You would not “lose”. But for me this is the Stealth Sports Sedan champion.
