Chicago – The Yankees are not far away from the return of one of their trade deadline additives in the fold.
Austin Slater started on Friday evening with a rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and hit 2-out-3 over five innings in the left field while he returns from a hamstring tribe that he suffered on August 4.
The outfielder is expected to play again on Sunday and will probably get a third game under his belt on Tuesday before the Yankees consider activating him.
“We will see in the coming days what is most logical,” said Aaron Boone on Friday at Rate Field for a 10-2 victory over the White Sox.
The Yankees acquired Slater for his ability to hit left -handed pitchers, against whom he has a .814 Ops and .795 for his career.
With schedules that will be extended to 28 on Monday, the Yankees do not have to send any of their current players to make room for Slater’s return.
But because it does not sound like the Yankees will be ready to activate him on Tuesday when they open a series against the Astros, they can call Catcher JC Escarra in the meantime to give them extra flexibility on the couch for days when both Ben Rice and Austin Wells are on the line -up.
Some fans shout at Spencer Jones as one of the 1 September call-ups of the Yankees, but that will not happen without a clear lane to play, which currently does not exist.
As it is, teams get only one extra position player and one extra pitcher, compared to the old days of unlimited September call-ups as long as players stood on the 40-man Roster.
“I think it’s probably the right one, only from a competition position,” said Boone. “It is a completely different game, as it used to be. One team may play with 33, the other team may play with 27. From a competition position that is probably not the right way to go. So so much if I like a few boys here, personally and from a team position, I think it’s the right one.”
Again, Aaron Judge played catch and threw at the second base and a Cutoff -Manman before the game on Friday, and continued to go through a FlexorTam through his progression without any clear date for when he could play the right field again.
In the meantime, Giancarlo Stanton started a second consecutive game in the right field, although he is not expected to play the field here in all four games.

Jazz Chishholm Jr. Stable his 25th basis of the season on Friday, making him the sixth Yankee who has a 25-homer, 25-Steal season, member of Bobby Bonds, Rickey Henderson, Alfonso Soriano, Alex Rodriguez and Curtis Granderson.
Chishholm is 15-out-15 in Steeling about his last 27 games after 0-Uit-2 in 39 games of June 11-21 June. The difference, he said, is healthy after he had played a groin problem that he had sustained in Kansas City in a match of 11 June.
“Finally I got my legs back after all the stuff in the middle of the season,” he said. “Now I feel good enough to run every time I go there.”
