Despite the fact that the majority of the teams did not roughly complete their place in the Postseason. Until the last day of the season – shouting at the Padres and Cubs for sorting things in advance – the First zippers for Game-by-Game Playoff Opportunities For the Wildcard Round are now live on the site. None of these projections have been set in stone; Things will shift when we approach the game time and get a better idea of schedule configurations and starting pitching plans.
To remind everyone, the Zips Playoff model is quite different from the normal projections that you see on the site during the regular season. From April to September, Zips has to see the forest in front of the trees, but in a short sprint we can concentrate more on the individual trees themselves. We can make informed guesses about who each game starts, what the line -ups will look like, who is healthy and who is not, and so on. The Zips Game Matchup Tool has a built-in line-up batter that projects the line of every pitcher and Slagman against every opposite batter and pitcher, so it is not necessary to look at the generalized offensive power of a team. The late season also comes with the advantage of being able to run the full, more robust model of zippers instead of the simpler model used during the regular season, a compromise required by the fact that projecting the entire competition takes more than a day.
Is the model perfect? Of course not. All models are wrong, but some are useful. The approach I use has benefits in some very specific situations in which the seasonal record of a team is not a good predictor of performance. In 2019, for example, ZIPS saw the Nationals as a much more dangerous opponent for the deadgers than the conventional wisdom, based on Washington’s ability to concentrate a very large percentage of the team’s innings in a few excellent pitchers.
If the starters of a certain game are not officially confirmed, the aforementioned pitcher is my most trained gamble. Projections for the division series will pop up after the WildcardRonde has been completed, with the projections of the championship series after the division series closes, and so on. For now you see those tabs gray. In addition to game-by-game projections, you will also find the odds of the series, which will update as each series progresses.
Since Fangraphs offers a few different projection tools, there is a quick summary of the functions of the three models-de Fangraphs game opportunities, the Fangraphs Playoff opportunities and the game-by-game Odds with zippers that are the most relevant for the after season:
Fangraphs Postseason Projection Toles Comparison
| Function | FG Game Odds | FG Playoff -opportunities | Zippers Game-by-Game |
|---|---|---|---|
| Projects game results | YES | NO | YES |
| Projects Results Postseason Series | NO | YES | YES |
| Projects future postseason rounds | NO | YES | NO |
| Line -up/schedule | Line -up | Generally projected Playing time | Projected Game Line -Up |
| Accounts for starting pitcher | YES | NO | YES |
| Basic projection system | Steamboat/zippers | Steamboat/zippers | Zip |
| Updates | Before/during the game | Shortly after the game ends | Before/shortly after the end of the match |
Now come the actual games that are played on the field and are much nicer to look at than projections! Remember that, as always, when the projections look bad, it is actually due to the inherent errors in this specific iteration of the multiverse!
