The release of Lakhan, facilitated by the Legal Services Authority (DLSA) district, came after the Supreme Court of Allahabad had acquitted him earlier this month.
A resident of the village of Gauraye in the Kaushambi district, Lakhan, born on January 4, 1921, according to his prison attractions, was arrested in 1977.
Lakhan was involved in the death of a man named Prabhu Saroj, who was killed during a fight between two groups on August 16, 1977.
He, together with three other men, was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment by the District and Sessions Court Prayagraj in 1982.
He then appealed to the Supreme Court of Allahabad, which acquitted him after 43 years on May 2, 2025.
Of the four convicts who appealed against the judgment of the court in the Supreme Court, three died during the case of the case.
“After the judicial order and with the collaboration of the district prison -Superintendent, Lakhan was released on Tuesday (May 20, 2025) from the district prison of Kaushambi,” said extra district judge Poornima Pranjal, secretary of the Kaushambi DLSA.
