“That’s a bit weird” – Steve Nicol fears that Liverpool might make a huge transfer error

Steve Nicol has encouraged Liverpool to reconsider what he thinks is a ‘strange’ transfer pursuit, given the current composition of the team in Anfield.

Even after the recent acquisition of Hugo Ekitike, the Reds remain strongly connected to a potential British record for Alexander Isak, with reports on an range of £ 100 million for the Newcastle striker.

That is in the middle of a shortage of center backs in the team, with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate the only natural senior options in that area after the sale of Jarell Quansah and the injury to Joe Gomez.

Nicol fears that Liverpool is wrong

Talk about ESPN FCNicol Liverpool’s rumors questioned the chase of the Swedish sniper and insisted that instead they should prioritize a movement for a new center-back.

The former Reds defender said: “I think it’s really strange that if Liverpool is drawing Liverpool Isak for £ 120 million tomorrow, I will not dance on the table, which seems a bit strange … I want a center-back. If Ekitike would not have been in Liverpool, I would dance on the table if you turned around tomorrow and said we would have signed Isak.

“The fact that they now have Ekitike … It feels a bit like something that you don’t need, if there is a big hole that must be filled, but you could spend £ 120 million on something that you probably don’t need. That is quite strange.”

Does Nicol have a valid point?

Nicol’s opinion may not be universally welcome to Liverpool fans who are understandably enthusiastic about the prospect of signing the second highest score in the Premier League of 2024/25, but his pragmatic attitude is easy to justify.

Even after the tragic death of Diogo Jota and the sale of Luis Diaz, the Reds still have a lot of depth in the attack when things get up, although the situation could change if the will of Federico Chiesa or Ben Doak would leave in the following month.

Although we have one of the best center-back pairs in the world in Van Dijk and Konate, it would be risky to bank revenue to be both available all season. Even once Gomez gets back full fitness, we still seem to be short in that area of the field.

Isak is perhaps the luxury item on the market, but someone like Marc Guehi is currently a more practical target to meet the needs of the team. It is as if you feel like a Rolls-Royce, but you realize that a less expensive (but still no bargain) car is the more advisable purchase.

Nicol’s argument is valid, even if it may not be what everyone wants to hear. However, as we know now, the Anfield -Hierarchy will not be a bit influenced by public opinion when it comes to determining Liverpool’s transfer strategy.

Let’s hope that whatever happens between now and the deadline of the end of the summer, there is no reason for it later in the season.
