Conflict A ‘terrible challenge’ for the Asean block
Southeast Asia expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies Think tank, Andreyka Natalegawa, the ABC told that neither of them could afford a full war.
He said it was important to quickly get an independent fact -on -finder or neutral observer, to get to the bottom of what the last round of violence has fueled “in an attempt to bring these events to a more calm state.”
There has never been a war between two Member States of the Association of South East Asian Nation (Asean) Blok, but he said that this conflict was a challenge for the institution.
“There is a real boost for parties such as Malaysia, as well as other ASEAN Member States, including Indonesia and Philippines, Singapore, to take a stronger position and actively go to both parties with their counterparts to find a resolution,” said Mr Natalegawa.
“This current crisis and the prospect of the current skirmishes that arise in something bigger is a real terrible challenge for the institution.”
Thailand had not shown an interest in mediation of third parties, even though it would consider Malaysia’s peace proposal.
Mr Natalegawa said that this was in line with the earlier wish of the country to achieve a bilateral solution for tension.
He said it is striking -the proposal was an important step from the ASEAN chairman, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
“The question will just be whether there is some appetite on both sides to enter into this kind of mediation,” he said.
