Thailand and Cambodia to hold conversations about fatal border conflict in Malaysia | The Express Tribune

The leaders of Thailand and Cambodia will live on Monday mediation interviews about their fatal border conflict in Malaysia, the Thai government said, even while both parties accused each other of launching new artillery attacks in disputed areas.

The conversations were planned to start on Monday at 3 p.m. Local time (0700 GMT), with acting Prime Minister Phumham Wechahaachaha that leads the Thai negotiating team, the government announced in a statement on Sunday evening.

Malaysia, which is chairman of the Asean Regional Cooperation Forum, has announced the Thai government that Cambodian Prime Minister would also follow their Manet the conversations, according to the statement.

The tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have been intensified since the Late May who kill a Cambodian soldier during a short border protection. Border troops on both sides were reinforced in the midst of a full diplomatic crisis that brought the fragile coalition government of Thailand to the edge of collapse.

The hostilities were resumed on Thursday and, within just four days, escalated in the worst battles between the Southeast -Asian neighbors in more than a decade.

The death toll has risen above 30, including 13 civilians in Thailand and eight in Cambodia, while the authorities report that more than 200,000 people have been evacuated from border areas.

Monday’s conversations come after Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had stopped a cease -fires last week and the American President Donald Trump said on Saturday that the two leaders had agreed to work to a ceasefires.

Calls for peace

Bangkok and Phnom Penh each accused the other side of filling the hostilities of last week.

The Ministry of Defense of Cambodia said that Thailand had shot at a number of points along the border on Sunday morning and had launched on the ground. The Ministry’s spokesperson said serious artillery was fired at historic temple complexes.

“For me I think it’s great when Thailand agrees to stop fighting, so that both countries can live with peace,” Phnom Penh University student Sreung Nita told Reuters.

The Thai army said that the Cambodian troops had fired shots in various areas, including near Burgershuizen, on Sundays, and mobilizing long-distance missileers.

“The situation remains tense and Cambodian troops can be prepared in the last phases before negotiations in the last phases to prepare intensified military operations to cause maximum damage,” the army said in an update.

In the Thai province of Sisaket, Reuters reporters heard shelling all Sunday and said it was unclear on which side of the border it was.

A government clinic at about 10 km (6 miles) from the border had shattered windows, collapsed walls and exposed wiring. Local media reported that it was hit by artillery on Saturday, two days after the building and the surrounding neighborhood had been evacuated.

Only a few men were worried about their houses, camping near an improvised bunker that they had dug for protection. Intermittent sounds of artillery fire could be heard in the distance.

“It is great that America insists on ceases -the fire because it would bring peace,” Sisaket -resident of Toosawan told Reuters.

Thailand and Cambodia have been bickering for decades over non-lied points along their 817 km (508-mile) country boundary, with the property of the old Hindu temples Ta Moan Thom and the 11th century Preah ViHear Central for the disputes.

Preah Vihear was awarded by the International Court of Justice to Cambodia in 1962, but the situation deteriorated in 2008 after Cambodia tried to mention it as a UNESCO world heritage site. Screens over several years brought at least a dozen killing.

Cambodia said in June that it had asked the International Court of Justice to resolve his disputes with Thailand. Bangkok says it has never recognized the jurisdiction of the court and has a bilateral approach.
