Seven or eight years ago, everyone who consumes business technical news would have come across the expression “The race to build autonomous vehicles.” In private conversations, company -sexecs and starting founders with whom I spoke, I sometimes referred to the commercialization of autonomous vehicle technology as ‘a race’. At the time, the expression seeped in reporting – including some of my articles.

What we have learned is that this is not so much a race as a long, curved and fragmented path – one that looks more like the fan of an alluvial plain than a race track – to develop and prove that the technology works oneND Make it a profitable company. It is not so much a race against others as an internal match with existential bets.

But that does not mean that there are no real battlefields among those who work on technology, especially with robotaxis. Many can point out the number of cities that a company has launched as one indicator. I believe that, although useful, it is a bit too vague and easy to manipulate.

Two recent news items make me think about more narrow and specific battlefields in cities: airports and public transport.

Airports were crucial for the success of Ride-Hailing companies. Robotaxis are no different. Nowadays, Waymo offers rides to and from Sky Harbor in Phoenix. And it clearly wants to unlock more.

This week, Waymo received a permit to test its autonomous vehicles at San Francisco International Airport, prior to the launch of a commercial service. This is only two weeks after Waymo was released to start testing at the nearby international airport of San Jose Mineta – and as Tesla Also tries to elbow his way to offer Ride-Hail service to these airports.

Meanwhile, Waymo and Transit Software Company By Dealed a deal That could have far -reaching consequences for cities. Government agencies that use Via Via Via Via Via Public Transport can fold the Waymo robotaxis directly in their public transport networks. The first city will be the suburb of Phoenix by the Chandler Flex fleet of On-Demand, shared vehicle fleet.

This is useful, in terms of reach, although it might not be a cow for Waymo in the short term. As a Waymo spokesperson explained to me: when a traditional Chandler Flex vehicle is not available, riders can have the choice to book a trip with Waymo. If a person chooses to ride with Waymo, Chandler Flex will lead him to the Waymo app to greet a completely autonomous ride at a lower price of $ 2 or less. For such a low price it is difficult to see how this will push the balance of Waymo into black.

Yet it is an important volume game. And indicated via CEO Daniel Ramot in One interview That he hopes that this will spread to hundreds of cities.
