Teams lay the groundwork for a potential trade

Vancouver is looking to fill a hole in a Quinn Hughes trade

The subject of Quinn Hughes is not going away. It could increase even more as we get closer to this weekend when the Vancouver Canucks take on the New Jersey Devils. Many are wondering if Quinn Hughes will remain in New Jersey and other pieces will leave the Devils and travel with Vancouver.

NHL Rumors: Vancouver Canucks didn’t want the Quinn Hughes conversation right now

However, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman wouldn’t be set up by Ron MacLean on Hockey Night in Canada during Saturday Headlines. As Friedman has stated, this conversation about the Quinn Hughes trade is taboo because of the potential consequences of manipulation. However, if a team, be it the Devils or another team, will pay a high price.

The problem, like Friedman notices this during a performance on the FAN 590 Hockey Show, is that the Devils need to move money to make this deal work, and they aren’t the only team that needs to do that.

Well, like I said, I think the reason everyone is watching the Devils right now is because I think the Devils do two things. I think they’re looking at what they can add and what they might need to leave out.

So I don’t think they’re the only team doing this. I look at it, Matt and I say, there’s probably other teams out there too. It’s whether the second part of your question is the cap and who can fit it in? I guarantee you the Devils aren’t the only team saying, okay, if we’re going to do this and Vancouver isn’t necessarily going to take it dollar for dollar, or if they don’t like what we have to do to be cap compliant, we’re going to have to call someone else.

The other part of the equation is that the Vancouver Canucks are looking for a center. So in any deal involving one of their players, they want to get a center in return. That’s where their conversation begins. Not to mention that you get a young defender in return. But the Canucks want to solve a problem at the center of this potential trade.

Should the New Jersey Devils be cautious about a Quinn Hughes trade?

And while everyone has the New Jersey Devils vs. Quinn Hughes do the Canucks value a player like Dawson Mercer as a center because he is better on the wing? So they will ask for someone like Nico Hischier and they will be denied that. That’s why the Detroit Red Wings, Philadelphia Flyers and a team that kicked out Elliotte Friedman, as well as the Pittsburgh Penguins, may have better offers.

Not to mention the teams that could be up against themselves, like the Anaheim Ducks, Chicago Blackhawks or even the Vegas Golden Knights. But there will be someone who can pull the Mikko Rantanen card in this case. Could it be the Carolina Hurricanes? In the long run, he’s headed east. To win in the short term, there is a team that would stand on its own and take the risk of him not signing long term, or convince him to stay there long term.

I think two things. I think it’s very likely he’ll go east if they move him, but I think that’s the most likely thing we’ll see, or at least in the long run, I think that would be the case. I shouldn’t say that now, because in the long run I think most likely East.

But there are teams where they bet on themselves. Are they going to do their research now? Will they make some sneaky calls to see what he might be thinking, sure, but I think there are some teams that could say something like, “Hey, if we get him in here and he sees what we’re doing, he might want to stay,” and some teams will look at that.

Vegas is obviously not an East Coast team, so I don’t know if they really fit into this conversation, but Vegas is a team that really believes and has proven that guys will get there and want to stay there.

So I’m sure there are other teams that will look at it the same way, like guys will come here and want to stay here. I’ll tell you this, you know, who couldn’t talk about it yet, but who I think could is Pittsburgh.

Again, all these conversations are just lurking the basis for a possible transaction later. That’s what General Managers do all the time. It will be interesting if the Canucks decide to move because they don’t want to. They just started a fire that can’t be put out.
