The Kiwis have been placed in Group D alongside Afghanistan, South Africa, UAE and Canada. They will play three matches at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai and the other at the colossal Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad for their group stage in the 20-team grand tournament.
Santner & Co. are getting a great workout ahead of the global extravaganza as they play a five-match T20I series in India in January.
Strengths
The abundance of firepower in the batting line-up is one of the BlackCaps’ key strengths heading into the 2026 T20 World Cup. Finn Allen has been harassing opposition bowlers during the Big Bash League. He is expected to open the batting with Devon Conway, and this could be a great combination at the top for the Kiwis. Allen can tonk the ball from the start, and this allows Conway to bide his time before exploding. The likes of Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman and James Neesham can do the heavy lifting.
New Zealand also has a plethora of spin bowling all-rounders in their line-up. In addition to captain Mitchell Santner, the team includes Michael Bracewell, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindraand Mark Chapman who can do a good job with the ball. The presence of so many all-rounders contributes to the balance of the team.
Weaknesses

Lack of quality spinners could be a problem. While there are plenty of spin bowling options, there is no one that can go through a batting line-up. Santner is a phenomenal spinner, but he is someone who is ideal for keeping things tight and building pressure. Ish Sodhi will have to play an attacking role and look to take wickets, even if it results in him becoming a bit expensive.
Another concern could be the lack of death bowling specialists. Lockie Ferguson can be a bit inconsistent, but he likes that kind of thing Matt Henry and Jacob Duffy are more powerful with the new ball, especially when he starts swinging. However, that might not happen at too many venues during the T20 World Cup.
Possibilities

The upcoming T20 World Cup is a great opportunity for New Zealand to bounce back strongly in ICC tournaments. In the past decade New Zealand reached the knockouts of most of the ICC events they participated in. However, their early exit from the 2024 edition of the T20 World Cup was a huge setback. The Kiwis would like to put things right in the coming edition. It is also a fantastic opportunity for some talented youngsters to step up in a major event where the pressure is at an all-time high.
Threats

Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry are expected to go on paternity leave sometime during the T20 World Cup. This would create a huge void in the team. While Henry is a real wicket-taker with the new ball, Ferguson is their best option in the death overs.
