Team GB is guaranteed to be a place in the Cricket Tournament for men in LA 2028 after the International Cricket Council has chosen to use the regional qualification format that is preferred by the Olympic Movement.
The decision is supposed to have provoked a return from Pakistan and New Zealand, which are confronted with the return of cricket to the Olympic Games after 128 years, with India and Australia awarding spots from Asia and Oceania based on the ICC rankings. The International Olympic Committee is in favor of regional qualification to ensure that all parts of the world are represented on the games, so it is a really global event.
With the return limited to two Six Team T20 tournaments, it was expected that the qualification was tightly disputed, in particular with the USA side in line to get an automatic place as a host country.
After discussions during the annual general meeting in Singapore this month, the ICC decided to use a regional qualification system. It has been proposed that the top team in Asia, Oceania, Europe and Africa automatically qualifies together with the US, who would represent America. That would have consequences for West -Indian Islands that hope to compete.
On the ICC ranking list, India, Australia, South Africa and Great -Britain would be eligible with the hosts, with the mechanism to determine the last place to be decided.
One of the Caribbean countries could replace the US if their administrative problems are not solved after the ICC has called on the USA Cricket board to resign this month. Pakistan and New Zealand are unhappy with the decision of the ICC, but although it is not yet to be ratified by the board, it is unlikely that it will be reversed.
New Zealand is fourth in the ICC T20 rankings, closely in third place behind England, but will miss as Australia second, with the US in 17th place, despite reaching the Super 8 phase last year at the World Indies, which they met with the West India.
Qualification for the Olympic ladies’ tournament will be determined by the T20 World Cup next year. England organizes the event, so team GB is in a good position to qualify and would expect to reach the semi -final at least.
Since 1900, Cricket has no longer been on display at the Olympic Games-the men of Great Britain defeated France in a one-off competition for the gold medal but has been confirmed as part of the schedule for LA, with competitions organized in Pomona, California, 30 miles east of the city.
If it is successful, ICC will lobby for larger tournaments at the Brisbane Games 2032 and that cause would be helped if Ahmedabad wins the right to organize the Olympic Games four years later. Doha, Istanbul and Santiago are the other confirmed bidders for the 2036 matches.

The cricket board of England and Wales started setting up a Great Britain team and is in advanced negotiations with Cricket Scotland about creating a new entity, GB Cricket, to manage the Olympic process. A memorandum of understanding with Cricket Ireland is also being worked on which Noord -Ierse Cricketers are eligible for Team GB.
GB Cricket is expected to be officially formed in the coming months. It should then be officially recognized by the ICC and the British Olympic Association before it becomes full members of the National Olympic Committee.
