Last weekend the North California Golf Scene witnessed history. Sacramento’s own Taylor Baker delivered a performance for the centuries on the 55th Sacramento County Women’s Golf Championship, held on Mature Golf Course on 26-27 July.
After opening with a solid 3-under-par 69, Baker came to shoot out in the last round of Sunday and incredible 62 and break the ladies’ course in Mather in the process. Her two-day total of 131 (69-62) earned her the title of the championship flight and put her name with the most dominant champions in the history of five decades of the tournament.
“This was one of the most impressive performances we have seen in the history of this event,” said Deborah Kanner tournament. “Taylor’s round on Sunday was downright historic. She showed balance, precision and pure passion for the game.”
The annual amateur event, organized by the Sacramento Golf Council, brings together the top of female talent from all over North California -but Baker has stolen the show.
A star in the turnout
Baker, recently graduated from Rio Americano High School, soon became one of the most discussed young golfers in the region. She made the headlines last year by becoming the first Rio Americano player who won the CIF Individual Norcal Championship and continued her momentum with strong performances on the Nationale Toneel.
Her growing list of distinctions includes:
- 3rd place ends at the IMG Academy Junior World Championship (70-67-70)
- Quarter finalist with the Western junior of the ladies
- Went to the round of 64 on the Junior Championship of the US Girls
Locally she dominated the high school circuit – breaking every golf record for ladies at Rio Americano. She was named Team MVP and achieved all four years all four years. She made just as much impression on the impression – conducting with a 4.0 GPA.
What is the next step for Taylor?
Baker will continue her golf trip at Cal Poly this fall, where she will join the Golf Team of Mustangs Ladies while she is in business. With her name etched in the Mather Golf Course Record Books and a championship trophy in hand, the future of Taylor Baker is rosy. From Sacramento Fairways to College Competition and beyond, we will keep a close eye on this rising star.
