Tapology has just left no doubt which combat sports site is on top of the mountain. On Monday, the site introduced a new ranking system that will immediately become a reference point for the MMA world, and it is better than the system that the UFC uses that even Dana White admits is inadequate.
As a journalist who covers MMA for 15 years, I am personally ecstatic to see an official ranking system without human bias and one that has all the rhyme after a deep examination and the reason why I regularly have to refer to it.
Tapology’s new ranking system for fighters eliminates human subjectivity, media and voices of fans. Instead of ‘Vibes’, such as Founder of Tapology Gregory Saks It places it in an article by Ben Fowlkes of the non-crowned, the new model uses a data-driven algorithm to only evaluate any active UFC hunter on the basis of performance statistics.
This system, in the making for five years, measures the last six UFC attacks of each hunter, taking into account the strength of the schedule, short-notice fights and the quality of victories and losses.
Let’s look at the upcoming middleweight fight between Joe Pyfer and the current No. 14 185 pounder of the UFC, Abus Magomedov. It feels like Pyfer should almost be arranged, but because the UFC ranking system stops number 15, it is difficult to know how close he is to have a number next to his name – as Jon Anik would say.
Well, according to The ranking of TapologyMagomedov is number 18 and it is pyfer with the higher ranking at number 16. What does this tell us – especially those who are normally a slave to the UFC system? It tells us that this is an even matchup and one that is still intriguing than when it was announced for the first time.
The new ranking system also introduces a new way to look at upcoming events. We can use the rankings to see how many top 50 hunters are set to compete. According to Tapology, the upcoming UFC fighting evening has led by Roman Dolidze vs. Anthony Hernandez, usually boys and girls arranged in the top 50.
In particular, all except five hunters who are set to compete in the top 50 hunters in the world in their weight class. That is partly deceptive in view of the fact that one of those hunters is the former men’s flying weight title -Uceg. He makes his bantam weight debut in a fight against veteran Ode Osbourne. Erceg is certainly one of the 50-best bantam weights, but he must prove first for the credit of the ranking.
As White has mentioned, the current system of the UFC has room for human errors, because it is sensitive to bias and the inevitable factor of the prisoner. Although this system has its critics for sure, it does not have the same mistakes. That is at least refreshing. You have to ask yourself whether White is being asked about this in Chicago on UFC 319 or if someone has the chance.
And if he is asked, it will be interesting to see how he reacts. Historically, White has not been removed from recognizing problems with his own rankings of his promotion, once they call ‘a pain in the butt’. But he is also known to resist external influence, especially when it comes to public tools that have not been made in -house. The independent framework of Tapology can get a grip, even without the blessing of the UFC, especially if fighters begin to refer it for callouts and central heating building. The more it is used to justify matchups or competition status, the harder it will be to ignore.
It will also be interesting to see if real-life conditions will influence an evolution of Tapology’s ranking system. Take it from someone who has tried to make their own MMA statistics; You sometimes think you have everything right and then something unexpected happens.
In any case, Bravo Tapology.
