It is hard to believe that this strange and unique season is almost over. The rays have completed their penultimate series of the season this afternoon, with only three games to play until they hang it until next year (where we will certainly hope that we will see them play in a real MLB stadium … no shadow against the Tarpons). In their last match against the division rival Baltimore Orioles, they had Drew Rasmussen on the hill, against Povich for the Orioles.
Jake Mangum immediately got things on the bat (meaningful play), with a lead -off single in the first. This was unfortunately followed by three from row to end the inning pointless. In half, Gunnar Henderson received a two-out single, followed by Ryan Mountcastle who safely reached a throw error from Carson Williams. Henderson was then caught stealing third, and although the Orioles asked for an answer review, the call on the field was maintained and the inning ended.
Richie Palacios ran to start the second inning. Then Nick Fortes immediately hit him. Too bad that a doubles and a strikeout followed, remained behind again and left Baserunners stranded and not runs on the board. Jeremiah Jackson received a lead -off single for the Orioles in the second half of the inning, then Colton Cowser and Coby Mayo walked. Rasmussen, however, managed to reverse things, but get three outs in a row to end the inning.
In the third Bob Seymour continued the trend to get the first batter with a lead -off single. Later we received back-to-back singles from Yandy Diaz and Junior Caminero. A Christopher Morel Double brought in two runs and first got the rays on the board.
Palacios then hit a pocket fly to bring in another run. That would be for the rays that inning, but they were 3-0 by the end.
With one in half of the house, the day of Rasmussen was done and he was drawn for Jesse Scholtens, making him the more open to the game. After the second zero, Ryan Mountcastle hit a solo -homer. It was the only run that the Orioles would get in the inning, but it was a big one.
In the fourth, the Rays went 1-2-3 and their series Baserunners ended. There was also some positional shuffling and Everson Pereira was replaced by Tristan Gray. Whatever they did, it worked, because the Orioles went three-up, three-down.
Mangum got another single to open the fifth inning. Then, with one out, Junior Caminero hit a single. A doubles of Christopher Morel put an end to the inning. Dylan Beavers got a one-out walk in half of home. Then, after the second zero, Henderson ticked a single. Mountcastle continued his unexpected dominance over the rays with a single to score beavers, so at the end of the fifth the score was 3-2.
Palacios hit a single to lead the sixth. With one out, Carson Williams ran. A gray Double brought one point home and it was almost two, but Williams was tagged at home.
That was it for Povich, who was replaced by Yaramil Hiraldo. Bob Seymour then hit a single to score Gray.
Mangum hit and stole second, but despite his heroic efforts, the rays should settle for the two runs they had. The Orioles went 1-2-3 in half.
Kade Strowd was the next from the Pen of the O, I think that you can never have too many guys called Gift/quay on your pitching staff. He has put the rays in order. Fortunately the Orioles had the same kind of happiness in the second half of the inning.
The rotating door of the Orioles Bullpen Broguht Rico Garcia afterwards. Nick Fortes received a lead -off single, with Carson Williams and Tristan Gray Singling right behind him to load the bases. Although they are in the perfect position to blow the game wide open, the rays were fine with the following three batters. If you wonder if this would come back to chase them later, that would absolutely. In the second half of the inning, MountCastle got a one-out walk. Jeremiak Jackson then hit a single. Cowser turned out, but Mountcastle could bring it in to score thanks to a wild pitch. Kevin Kelly came in from the Rays Bullpen, but a Coby Mayo Homer brought things to 5-5. A pinch-hitting Adley Rutschman tripled, but the Orioles could no longer bring in runs.
With about a million positional changes by the Orioles for the top of the ninth, they also brought Keegan to Pitch. He got the rays in order, so they had to cross their fingers and toes for extra innings. Unfortunately, the chance would not come, because Dylan Beavers hit a walk-off home run on the first batter of the home to end the game.
