The in-form Aston Villa wants to break open the title race
The Premier League weekend starts with a major showdown when Aston Villa host Arsenal during the lunch break on Saturday. It’s third against first, with two of the in-form teams in the competition going head-to-head.
Arsenal has the look of a champion this season. The Gunners have lost just once all season and conceded just seven goals in their fourteen games.
They were equally impressive in Europe, with maximum points from five Champions League games. After three consecutive second-place finishes, Arsenal are looking to finally cross the line this season and end the club’s 22-year title drought.
However, there are few tougher matches than this weekend’s acid test in the Midlands. Villa have recovered from a shaky start and have now won eight of their last nine Premier League games. It is also six consecutive wins in all competitions for Villa, led by former Arsenal boss Unai Emery.

A win for either side would be a big statement, but if the home side can beat the leaders, Arsenal’s lead could be cut to just two points by the end of the weekend. Villa can move within three points of the top with a win.
Can Chelsea stop the loss of Caicedo?
Moises Caicedo’s crude challenge on Mikel Merino earned the midfielder a three-match ban earlier this month, with the Ecuadorian dismissed during Chelsea’s derby draw against Arsenal.
With ten men, Chelsea struggled to some extent, but the Blues certainly felt his absence in Leeds in midweek. Chelsea crashed out at Elland Road, losing 3-1, with Enzo Maresca admitting there were few positives. Leeds overwhelmed their visitors, with a midfield trio of Ao Tanaka, Ethan Ampadu and Anton Stach asserting themselves in the game.
It’s hard to imagine Chelsea would have been so passive if Caicedo had been on the pitch. The 24-year-old leads the division in interceptions and remains arguably the best ball winner in the Premier League at the moment.
His importance to Chelsea is clear from the statistics. Chelsea have won just two of the eight Premier League games Caicedo has not started since arriving from Brighton (25%), a win rate that rises to 52% (43/82) when he is in the XI.
Caicedo remains unavailable for selection for another two games. A tough trip to Bournemouth follows, before Everton, in impressive away form under David Moyes, head to Stamford Bridge.
Dyche makes first return to Everton
There will be a familiar face in the opposition dugout this weekend as Sean Dyche makes his first return to Everton.
It has been less than 12 months since Dyche’s departure following an 11-match winless run last season. However, it feels like a lot has changed since then.
David Moyes’ return has coincided with an improvement in results, while the summer move to the Hill Dickinson Stadium already makes the Dyche era feel like a distant memory.
🗣️“Deep down they know the work we have done…What reception I get is not important.”
“Moyesy is doing well, as I thought he would. They have spent some money. They knew they had to invest and they have,” – Forest Manager, Sean Dyche pic.twitter.com/qM3OMJkhMv

The 54-year-old is not remembered too fondly by Evertonians as things took a turn for the worse, although he deserves some credit for reigning under difficult circumstances.
Dyche was given two points deductions to ensure Everton remained a top team, allowing the club to stay afloat despite minimal resources and off-field problems. His tenure ended terribly, but he laid the foundations for a new era with Everton looking upwards.
Manchester City leak a concern for Guardiola
It’s not often that a team concedes six goals in two games and still comes away with maximum points. That will not be lost on Pep Guardiola, who has seen his side overcome thrillers with Leeds and Fulham in the past week.
After taking a 2-0 lead against Leeds at the Etihad, the Citizens needed a final goal from Phil Foden to take the points last weekend.
By midweek City were cruising at Craven Cottage until a Fulham battle produced a grandstand finish. There was much relief when the whistle blew for full-time and City emerged victors 5-4.
City have now conceded 16 goals in the Premier League this season, more than double league leaders Arsenal’s total and the most of any side in the top six. Guardiola needs his backline to rediscover their form if his side are to stay in the title race.
Leeds seem lifted by Farke formation
Daniel Farke adjusted his tactics in midweek as Leeds snapped a four-match losing streak to beat Chelsea. A move to a 3-5-2 formation paid off for Leeds, who fully deserved the three points at Elland Road.
It’s a system that seems to get the best out of the players at Farke’s disposal. Jaka Bijol was excellent and looked comfortable as part of a three-man forward line, while Gabriel Gudmundsson impressed with his extra license to push forward from wing-back.

Perhaps most notable was the lift for Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha as the front pair. Neither forward is overly productive, but as a partnership their attributes complement well. It would be a shock if Farke did not stick to the new system for the visit of Liverpool on Saturday evening.
