Almost every recreational golfer sometimes suffers from power leaks in their swing. Unlike pros and elite amateurs, recreational players rarely maximize their efficiency when moving the golf club. But with a few key adjustments, you can gain some much-needed distance.
One of these power leaks is a lack of width in the backswing. Width is the distance between the torso and the arms as you swing, and generally speaking, the more you have, the more power you can create.
However, when it comes to recreational players, they tend to collapse their arm structure and become narrower than necessary for going back. This builds up less potential energy and leads to less power in the swing.
Luckily for you, there is a great feeling you can use to get rid of this “slack” in your swing. In a shoot with GOLF Magazine a few years ago, Top 100 teacher John Tillery used a piece of rope attached to a tee in the ground to demonstrate the proper sense of width during the backswing.
“I need some tension in this thing if I’m going to turn it and load it,” he said. “There’s going to be a bit of a feeling of me pulling this thing out of the ground until I get it tight.”
The images above show the correct (right) and incorrect (left) way to do this. You should feel like you are holding the rope tight as you initiate your backswing so that you can start with the right force and create width.
“I use the analogy of a boat pulling an inner tube,” Tillery said. “If the string is loose, you’re going to have a hard time putting much torque on it. It’s hard for me to have any load in the backswing and really let my muscles spring when I drag the slack back and then play a catch behind it.”
If you want to get more width (and power) in your swing, try this drill. It will teach you the right feel to take the slack out of your swing and generate a more efficient stroke.

For optimal results, we recommend incorporating the Power Shift Board into your regular training routine. Using it for a few minutes every day or as part of your pre-round warm-up can significantly improve your swing mechanics and overall performance. When should I shift my weight in my golf swing? Shift your weight slightly to the back foot during the backswing, then smoothly transfer it to the front foot during the downswing and impact. When following, most of the weight should be on the front foot, with the back foot on the toe. Timing and flexibility are the key words. Where should my weight be when I touch my driver? When you hit a driver, your weight should be evenly distributed or slightly in favor of your back foot. During the backswing, shift a modest amount of weight to your back foot. During the downswing, you bring your weight forward smoothly, making sure that most of your weight is on your front foot at impact. This promotes a powerful, upward angle of attack, optimal for driving.
