Two South Australian companies have been recognized for their bold vision at this year’s prestigious National Architecture Awards.

The awards, presented by the Australian Institute of Architects, highlighted 43 projects from across the country that represent the country’s best new architecture across residential, commercial and community buildings, addressing the country’s most pressing societal challenges.

Troppo Architects took home the COLORBOND Award for Steel Architecture for their innovative Flinders Chase Visitors Center on Kangaroo Island.

In their jury citation at the South Australia Architecture Awards, the judges said the building’s innovative use of steel, combined with locally sourced, environmentally friendly materials, demonstrated a commitment to both environmental and community-oriented design.

“Steel plays a key role in the Centre’s architecture, particularly in the framing and roofing, providing durability, fire resistance and low maintenance performance in an area prone to bushfires,” the report said.

“The design integrates solar panel-covered walkways, steel shelters, unique sinks and rainwater collection systems, showcasing steel’s versatility and contribution to sustainability.

“The elegant twist to the roof of the Grand Gallery has been carefully resolved, creating a striking entrance to the facilities.

“It is complemented by a series of skillion roofs for the other pavilions; a terrain with roof shapes that generate changing perspectives as you move around the site.”

Taylor Buchtmann Architecture was also recognized with a national award for Residential Architecture – Houses (Alterations and Additions) for their creation The Stopover – a dilapidated former grain warehouse repurposed as rural overflow accommodation.

In their jury citation at the South Australia Architecture Awards, the judges praised it for offering farmers respite from their surroundings, while also framing it.

“The original materials are balanced with contemporary patches, inserts and overlays,” the report said.

“The lifespan of the building is extended by its new purpose.

“All existing openings were retained, one new opening was required.

“A pair of timber-clad faceted capsules were installed and an existing veranda partially filled.

“The external detailing is particularly robust in response to nearby buildings and the challenging environment.

“The inside of the capsules was developed as smaller boxes within the larger grain storage volume, evolving into ‘lined’ interior spaces, continuing the relationship between the existing fabric and the new with greater intensity.

“In essence, The Stopover is a small controlled environment in a large and largely uncontrollable landscape.”

Australian Institute of Architects 2025 National Architecture Awards jury chair Jane Cassidy said these winners set a precedent for built architecture in Australia and helped address the many crises facing society – the housing, climate and cost of living crises – with innovative solutions.

“These models can and must inspire better communities across our country,” she said.

She also commented on the power of our public architecture, which sows the seeds for urban renewal.

“These buildings connect communities, promote urban renewal and strengthen the local economy,” she said.

“Similarly, the jury noted that design is increasingly used as a tool for regeneration – of landscapes, of relationships and of the future.

“These projects show us that architecture can be a catalyst for healing, equity and resilience in communities.”

“The prevalence of regional projects indicates that exceptional design is not limited to our cities. Architects working in regional locations face unique challenges – limited materials, scarce labor and higher costs of transportation and logistics – yet they deliver exceptional, imaginative design that deserves to be celebrated.”
