There are few times when a professional athlete publicly shows his commitment to his team. It’s rare, but when it does happen, the fans of that team must feel very good about it. On Wednesday, February 25, Twins fans can rejoice and celebrate the day as a victory — all thanks to young starting pitcher Taj Bradley.
The 24-year-old right-hander was set to hit the road and compete against Team Mexico, one of the many countries represented by the Twins in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, but a sudden decision change leaves Bradley in the Twins camp in Florida. That’s a great way to show where your priorities lie, which should build trust among the Twins community.
Taj Bradley has opted out of the WBC and will remain #MNTwins instead of pitching for Team Mexico.
Originally, Derek Shelton talked about his decision on Sunday, citing the importance of working with new staff, catcher, etc.

Taj Bradley will remain with the Twins through spring training after withdrawing from the World Baseball Classic
Minnesota was traded to the Twins at the 2025 deadline in exchange for Griffin Jax and is still a new clubhouse and atmosphere for Bradley. He made six starts with the Twins in 2025, recording a 6.61 ERA with 32 strikeouts in 31.1 innings. However, he finished the season in great fashion, striking out nine Rangers while allowing one run in six frames.
But it is still new territory for the youngster. He needs to get comfortable with his catchers and pitching coaches. But more importantly need to, Bradley actually want to building relationships within the organization. Showing that level of maturity should be a big step for him. After all, he’s competing for a spot in the starting rotation. There are no guarantees for him, but he puts his best foot forward.
Bradley has made one appearance so far in spring training, striking out five batters in three frames while allowing one run. That’s a solid first impression in any game, but the impression he’s leaving on himself by choosing to stay with the Twins this spring is far better than his results on the mound thus far. Derek Shelton must love this decision, as well as the rest of his coaching staff, plus the team itself. Bradley wants to help Minnesota win games in 2026, and he’s made that abundantly clear.
