Table tennis and para-table tennis are back on the agenda for the 2030 Commonwealth Games centenary in Amdavad.

The Indian city, also known as Ahmedabad, was today confirmed as host – with a schedule of 15 to 17 sports reinstated after the scaled-down Games in Glasgow next year, of which there will be 10 and will not include table tennis.

Table tennis, along with athletics, swimming, bocce, weightlifting and their para-sport equivalents, will be joined by artistic gymnastics, netball and boxing.

The process to complete the program starts in December and includes archery, badminton, 3×3 basketball, beach volleyball, T20 cricket, cycling, diving, hockey, judo, rhythmic gymnastics, rugby sevens, shooting, squash, triathlon and wrestling. Amdavad can also propose two new or traditional sports.

CEO of Table Tennis England, Sally Lockyer, said: “It’s fantastic news for our Team England athletes, staff and supporters that table tennis is back on the program for the centenary Commonwealth Games – and equally fantastic that para-athletes will be back, demonstrating just how inclusive our sport is. We are hugely grateful to Commonwealth Sport and delighted to be part of the sports program once again.

“The Games have given our established and emerging stars the opportunity to compete for medals in world-class company over the years, while building bonds of friendship between countries.

“We have seen some iconic moments since table tennis was first included at the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games, including two gold medals at the final Games in Birmingham in 2022.

“Congratulations to Amdavad on being selected as the host city – we can’t wait to be part of the centenary celebrations.”

Director of Performance Development, Gavin Evans, added: “I am delighted to hear that table tennis will be part of the Commonwealth Games again from 2030.

“The Games are a really good opportunity for our athletes to organize a major event mid-cycle, which will culminate in the Olympic Games two years later.

“I know our players will be super excited to play in India and we will go there with great hopes of winning medals, which we did in the recent Games.

“We have some great talent on the track who will have their sights set on the competition there, which in turn will bring more inspiration to the track.

“To those involved in making this decision I would like to express my gratitude and we very much look forward to competing in India.”
