Tabilo Saves 2 CPS, MUSETTI Verbijsts to win Chengdu title

Alejandro Tabilo saved two championship points on the Chengdu Open on Tuesday, where he conquered top seeds Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (5) to conquer his third ATP Tour title and first of the season.

The Chilean qualifying match saved two championship points on serve on 5-6 in the third set and then gathered from 1/4 in the decidend-set tie-break to be the second lowest ATP Tour Champion this season.

“I just had to stay mentally and physically,” Tabilo said. “I was so happy to make the first serving on match points. It was also an incredible effort from the team. It has been a long two weeks and I am just so happy.”

Tabilo lost its opening of six games of the year and missed two months of the European clay swing due to a wrist injury. Arriving in Chengdu with a 5-13 record of the season, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, Tabilo found its best level to triumph at the ATP 250 event.

In a tight final against Musetti, Tabilo hit eight fewer winners (29-37) and committed 21 more unchanged mistakes (44-23) than the Italian, but found the larger shots through the house directly to take the victory after two hours and 37 minutes in the first Lexus ATP head2head of the couple.

Musetti wanted to capture his first title at tour level since Naples in 2022, but failed to convert his chances into the third set. Tabilo saved the first match point with a Forehand winner and the second when Musetti tall hit a rally ball. Tabilo sealed the victory at his first match point, with his girlfriend and team the court ran after he had sealed his third top 10 victory.

Tabilo is now a triple titlist on tour level, which won in Auckland and Mallorca last year. He is 40 places at no. 72 in the PIF ATP Live ranking list and will return to the Top 100 for the first time since June.

Musetti has Chengdu in one place in seventh place in the PIF ATP Live Race to Turin. The Italian wants to make his debut in November on the home floor at the Nitto ATP Finals and to join countryman Jannik Sinner, who has already qualified for the prestigious end -of -year event.
