T20 World Cup 2026: ‘We will try to bring out the best version of ourselves’ – Phil Salt ahead of the Scotland match

Phil Salt has stated that England will look to take motivation from their defeat against West Indies and ensure they deliver their best performance in Saturday’s crucial Group C match against Scotland in Calcutta. England suffered a 30-run defeat to West Indies at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday, leaving no room for error in the remainder of the group stage.

Scotland, meanwhile, head into the battle with renewed confidence after an impressive win over Italy, having bounced back strongly from their own defeat to the West Indies. In both their T20 World Cup wins, in 2010 and 2022, they recovered from early setbacks to go on and lift the trophy.

Salt, who featured in both the semi-final and final of the 2022 edition, emphasized that the team believes in its ability to peak at the right time. With wins over Scotland and Italy needed to guarantee progression to the Super Eights, England will look to respond strongly and keep their campaign on track.

“I think that’s the hallmark of all good teams, and all good athletes in general, in professional sports. I think when your back is against the wall, you have to put out the best version of yourself…Obviously we did that in 2022 and we’ll try to do that again here. I’ve said it a few times now, but it’s very, very simple what we have to do. We have to remove the outcome from everything. We have to take away the outcome, focus on the processes of what we do and bring the best version of ourselves,” Salt said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

England also have the memory of a thrilling match against Scotland to keep them alert. At the 2024 T20 World Cup in Barbados, Scotland rose to 90 without loss after 10 overs before rain forced the match to be abandoned. That remains the only previous T20I meeting between the two sides, and Salt stressed that England will not take Scotland lightly in their upcoming clash.

“I know them all very well. I’ve seen a lot of their cricket and played against them a few times – not necessarily just England v Scotland, but in various franchise competitions. They’re a good side. They’ve got a good attack. I think as a collective they’ve got a lot of games under their belt as well. They’ve been in this position before and I think they’ll put up a good fight,” Salt said.

Salt scored a solid 30 from just 14 balls to give England a flying start on Wednesday before being caught in the ring by Romario Shepherd. Despite the dismissal, he insisted he would continue with the same aggressive approach, aiming to put pressure on the bowlers from the start. However, Salt acknowledged that adaptability has been a key part of his growth as a T20 batsman. He reflected on his experience with Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens during the 2024 IPL.

“While I was here, GG [Gautam Gambhir] was quite big for me and gave me some balls. That didn’t necessarily mean you had to stand there and block the first six, but it meant you had to be very, very smart. It was actually a big part of my improvement as a player, a big part of my improvement. Where are my high percentage shots? Where did they bowl? Where did they miss?,” Salt said.

“Knowing that, as I go into the game with the confidence that I’ve seen all the data, seen all the footage, that I’ve got a good idea of what’s coming at me – they could be bowling something completely different, but I’ve played the percentages with my preparation, and then I can go into the middle. I’ll train with that in mind, with where they’ve missed, what they’re going to do as defensive options. So I’ll tick that box as well. Then I’ll go out and do the exact same thing again, almost try it to repeat, try to extract the conscious thought as best you can,” he concluded.
