For the inexperienced, replacing a player requires the approval of the Event Technical Committee, and the UAE had to go through the same process to make a change to their original roster for the global event, which is being held in India and Sri Lanka. The International Cricket Council confirmed the development via a press release on Wednesday evening.
The Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) had stated this earlier Zohaib was sent home ahead of their opening match due to disciplinary issues. The board further said at the time that they will reveal further details when deemed appropriate. It has now emerged that Zohaib’s mental health was one of the reasons behind his exit from the twenty-team event.
Placed in Group D of the ongoing competition, the UAE side suffered a massive thrashing in their opening match against New Zealand at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. They lost to the Mitchell Santner-led side by 10 wickets, which seriously hurt their net run-rate in the table, where competition is tight.
The Waseem Muhammad-led side will now take on Canada on February 13, after which they will also face each other Afghanistan on February 16. A few days later they conclude their group stage with a match against South Africa. All these matches will be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
