Swindon Table Tennis League members are ready for an important season in honor of the centenary of the competition with a large number of special events and tournaments.
The festivities include turning the clock in the long -term annual Pickett Cup Team Handicap event, which is only played in the same format for one season as the original league matches of 100 years ago.
Teams consist of five players, all about one 21-up game (making 25 games per team match).
Is your club, competition or organization a milestone? Let us know by contacting the communication and marketing team.
Two other special tournaments are at the centenary in what promises to be one memorable weekend.
The Dave Kethero Swindon closed tournament will return to the old one-day event for the traditional singles and double matches on Saturday 21 March at Lawn Manor Academy (senior, junior and veteran). It is also hoping to contain a few ‘nice’ events, such as a sandpaper bat singles and a one-point knockout cup.
The next day the Oliver Tarrant Centenary Tournament will be a special singles event that is open to anyone who has ever played in the Swindon League. It will start with large groups with everyone who is moving ahead to knockout competitions based on group positions.
Only a current Table Tennis England Club plays membership (free) is required for this competition at Lawn Manor Academy on Sunday 22 March.
On the social side, a special age-four evening will take place in the Nalgo Club on Tuesday December 16, when players and former players can come together to recall memories of light refreshments. There will be a number of ‘sideshows’, such as typical pub games (and mini-table tennis variations), representation of old equipment and trophies, photo time line of multi-champions, plus a souvenir program/memories booklet and ball.
The presentation and social evening on 3 June in the Goddard Arms Hotel include the presentation of competition trophies and the launch of the book, The story of table tennis in Swindon.
This fully illustrated, approximately 120-page A4 color book has been almost completed for a while and not only deals with events in the city, but also remarkable exploits by local players further away. The intention is still to launch it on the presentation evening, with previews of a selection of pages on the festive evening in December.
The expected price is around £ 12 and everyone who is interested in buying a copy is asked to contact us so that print orders can be estimated. Register your name with the author Alan Duke, or with a committee member or club secretary – and spread the word you think you would also like to obtain a copy.
